Trying to Get Pregnant

TTC after stillbirth

My husband and I decided to ttc a month after we lost our baby.. It's been well over 2 months now and I've missed my period this month. Took a PT but all came back neg. Called the dr and they said they won't do blood work until I get a pos. any advice?

I'm sorry for your loss.  Have you had your first period yet?  Bodies do crazy things after a pregnancy/loss.  Definitely consider temping to figure out what is going on with your cycle.

  • I'm so very sorry for your loss.

It's not uncommon for losses and pregnancy to impact your cycles. Even if one is of your 'normal' length, the next one might not be. Have you gotten a period since the stillbirth? If not, and, again, I don't know how this works for stillbirth vs miscarriage, but were your levels all followed down to 0 and did your doc give you the okay to try again? It could be that your levels going down slowly delayed the start of your cycle.

I would say test once a week until you hit 60 days without a period, and at that point call your doc and they may or may not want to start you on something to jump start your cycle. It might also be good to start temping/charting and/or using OPKs so that you can start to make sense of your cycles and know whether you are actually late or whether your cycles are finding their new normal.

So sorry for your loss :(

A loss at any point in time can really mess with your cycles.  I had an early loss and it took almost 2 months for me to have my first af.  I agree, read the newbie blog and chart.  It will help you figure out if/when you are ovulating and when you should expect af to arrive.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

Much like PP cycles it can take a long time for your cycles to regulate after a late term loss. Your body knows that it had a baby but not that you didn't get to take them home. So your cycles may be all over the place for a while.

Did your doctor give you a wait-period. Traditionally you are supposed to wait 4-8 weeks to allow your uterus & vagina to heal completely. TTC too early can make you prone to infection.

    Best of luck moving forward.

I am sorry for your loss. I know of two women very close to me who had stillbirths- one at 30 weeks and the other at 34. Both were told to wait 90 days to try. It took the first about 6 months to get pregnant after her waiting period was over. The second is just reaching the end of her waiting period. I'm no doctor, but one month after loss seems short to me. It may take your body a few months to get stable. I hope your wait is short, and good luck!
  • Thanks everyone! I appreciate the help.

I agree, TTC within a month after giving birth seems awfully soon, I'm surprised you were cleared for sex at all earlier than the typical 6 weeks post partum.  Things can be all kinds of wonky for months yet, please allow your body some time to heal and figure itself out again after the ordeal it's been through, don't try to rush it.

  • Everyone has pretty much covered it. I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm ttc after a stillbirth as well. Unfortunately it can take a while for your body to get back to normal after a loss. I'm pretty surprised that you were cleared to TTC again so soon. After both of my losses, I was instructed to wait the normal PP period of 6 weeks. Either way, once you get to 60 days since your loss or last period your doctor should do blood work and put you on Provera to induce a period. It's easier said than done, but try to be patient with your body, it's been through a lot. Hugs.

  • I'm sorry for your loss :( I had a chemical pregnancy in April (totally different loss) and didn't have another period until the end of June. Your body may just need longer to adjust.
