High-Risk Pregnancy

Duodenal switch and pregnancy

Hi all.  I am three and a half years post duodenal switch (very specific kind of bariatric surgery).  Incredibly successful - got my BMI from 42.5 to 22 and I have stayed there for more than 2 years.  My vitamin levels have been fine, fine enough that all I had been taking is a prenatal and some vitamin D.  It had been about a year since I last had my levels drawn because they had been doing well, but I did just go ahead and have my primary doc draw all my levels and will of course adjust any supplements as needed.  I am 5.5 weeks pregnant and my first midwife visit isn't for another month.

So I'm wondering if there are any other post-DS'ers on here that are either currently or formerly pregnant, and if so if you had any special issues or special recommendations.
Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

Re: Duodenal switch and pregnancy

  • I am not a DSer but had a VS a little over a year ago. I am not too much further along than you, but I've had a rough go with morning sickness. My first pregnancy sprite and ginger ale carried me through.. Since I no longer do carbonation and I have a more sensitive stomach I ended up on zofran to help settle my stomach. I have had a lot of queasiness and getting in my liquids and protein has been super tough. Our ideas of smaller meals, more often has been helpful, but extra chewing is nauseating to me. I have also had a huge conflict with junk food and carbs, something I have had so little of the past year. It seems to be all I want and can stomach right now, but then makes me not feel well in turn. I take all my supplements regularly and don't have the same surgery so I'm not concerned about malabsorption, but I would definitely be getting your levels checked. My doctor explained the baby will take whatever it needs from you so a big concern is also keeping yourself healthy. I am also concerned about dealing with the emotions of gaining weight again. This is definitely a journey much different than my first! Good luck :)

  • I am 4 years out on my DS.. I have had several issues with my,vitamin levels before pregnancy. I'm 18w1d and have been having serious back pain to where I can't move. So I'm in physical therapy. I know you posted this awhile ago but I was hoping to hear how your pregnancy went and if there were any major complications.
