Rice cereal

My pedi have the go ahead to start rice cereal since my girls are 4 months now. I'm not sure what I expected but I mixed it per the directions (for 1st time babies) and it was super thin. And the girls didn't seem to know what to do with it when I did try spooing it in. It was just a mess. Im not sure any ended up in their tummies. I ended up mixing it in their bottles. Do I just keep trying with a spoon? Bottle feed it? Im really not worried. I know they dont " need" it, but curious others' experiences?

Re: Rice cereal

  • What Vinny said. Would not give in a bottle as it does not teach then how to eat, you're not giving rice cereal because it's healthy. While early feedings can be messy, it may also be a sign they aren't ready, especially if they continually push food back out. We started DD1 on rice cereal at 14wks and only did a few days of it before switching to puréed as she took to eating right away, as she had lost the tongue thrusting reflex. This baby DD2 is no were near ready.

  • Yup, use a spoon. They will show more interest once they are really ready for it.

My ds never liked the rice cereal. He also wasn't into any food until after 5 months. Follow their lead and have fun

  • Neither of my toddlers liked their purées thin, even from day one. Once I thickened it up, they gobbled it down. We started both of them at 4 mos.

  • Don't put it in tbe bottle. IMO, they most likely aren't ready, so I'd just hold off.

Yep I would back off wait a month and try again.
  • This might be a dumb question, but I haven't looked into much yet. What's the point of rice cereal? Is it just to introduce food? I guess I'm wondering if it's necessary/helpful for development, or if it's all just the same to do strictly BM until 6 months when real food is introduced.
  • My kids like it thicker. pedi's office said when it is as thick as oatmeal they are ready for first foods. Ds never did like it mixed with formula so I asked my pedi about using baby juices to mix it and she said yes. So mixed it with apple juice and they both loved it! Lots on the chin to start. They are 5 months now and we just introduced peaches.

I actually asked my dr this a couple days ago. She said it can be good for formula fed babies who tend to put on too much weight when the formula is not filling them up, since it is loaded with calories. She said once you see a baby drinking more than 36 oz or more a day, cereal may be a good option to keep their weight gain to a normal rate.

You mixed cereal with juice?! I'm sorry, I think your pedi is kind of an idiot.

Why? Mixing with juice is listed in the directions on the package.

I think I'm going to try this. I already regularly give my girls pear juice to help with constipation.

  • @zazu13‌ I give my LO an ounce of Apple prune juice every day. He is always constipated due to the fact that he is on increased calorie formula because of his feeding issues. I don't think it is unnecessary at all. The dietician on his cleft team told us that it was totally fine and I am pretty sure she got her masters in pediatric nutrition.

@woodstephanie‌ - yeah my girls are on juice daily (high calorie formula for one who was in NICU). I did side eye the pedi when he said to give it to them. I tried belly massage, rectal temp, lots of bicycle legs, etc, but 5 days w/o poop and shrieking in pain to pass bloody hard stools convinced me to try it. They also get miralax. We're on day 3 of no poops for both despite 2 oz juice every day + miralax the past week. :/

  • For true constipation, sure try some juice. But for most kiddos, no way do they need juice.

Also, ask a pediatric dentist how they feel about juice.
