Brown blood WWYD? UPDATE

edited July 2014 in October 2014 Moms
I think I know the answer to this but just need to 'hear' it from someone else. I just wiped and had brown tinged discharge. I'm trying not to panic because I was told early on that I had a cervical polyp and it would probably cause bleeding throughout my pregnancy (although I really haven't had any since the beginning. My dh wants me to call the dr but it's 11:30 pm and because I know I have the polyp, and the blood is brown, ANd just had an u/s 3 days ago that it should be okay to wait until the morning to call? Do you think it's ok to wait till morning? What would you do? Thanks! UPDATE: there was ore. Blood this morning so I called back and dr had me go into L & D. We spent a few hours at the hospital (stress test, internal exam & u/s) and all looks good, thank God. Guess bleeding probably came from polyp...but glad we went in to be sure. Thanks everyone!

Re: Brown blood WWYD? UPDATE

  • I think it would depend on a few things. Was it just on one wipe you noticed? Or was there more after a few wipes? Was there evidence of it in the toilet or on your panties?

My OB wants me to call with any kind of bloody discharge so I would be more inclined to call. However, if it was just a smudge on the tp, I would probably try to monitor and wait until the morning.

  • Are you Rh-? If so, you may still need a rhogam shot this weekend.

If it were me, I would call the on-call doc and let him/her decide if this warrants a trip in today, tomorrow, or a follow-up on Monday.

    Best of luck!

  • Thanks ladies. I'm not Rh- but I did call and just got off the phone with the on call dr who, at first, said to come right in but then I explained about the polyp and he asked whether or not I was having contractions, etc. I said I'd been having BHs but have been having them all along so he said that there's no way to be sure without getting checked but it should be okay and just call back if things get worse. Grrr so frustrating though. I'm sure everything is fine but the 'what ifs' start getting to me. Anyway, thanks again. Hopefully it'll be gone by tomorrow.

  • I am writing this response from a hospital bed because yesterday I had brown spotting. Call the on call doctor and they will give you directions of what to do and watch for. Then they may have you come in the next day. Do you have any kind of issues with your placenta that you are aware of? Marginal or complete previa? It is also possible to develop a sub chorionic hemorrhage at any time and those can be really risky. Even though I only have brown minor spotting they are keeping me overnight and giving me the steroid injections to mature the baby’s lungs just in case.

Just call. Can't possible do any harm but not calling might.

  • I would have called too. I had brown blood for about three days around 15 weeks. They told me to drink a lot of water and rest with my feet up and see if anything changed. The bleeding stopped and that was that. I had an ultrasound and they were never able to determine the cause of it, but said that brown blood is old blood and not an active bleed. I would call back tomorrow if it increases!

  • I had brown blood for at least six weeks of my pregnancy. And everything was and is fine. But every woman and every pregnancy is different. There is no harm in calling but try not to worry.

Sorry you're in a frustrating place, but it sounds like keeping the OB's office informed of any changes is the best thing you can do for now. I hope it's nothing serious.

  • I also have a polyp (or did, I guess they can come and go in pregnancy). I had a few rounds of spotting, some red, some pink, some brown, but all in the first tri. I think I'd be more inclined to go in now that we're all in the (or nearing the) third tri, but I'm a FTM, and I'd just want to be safe.
