Stupid question - baby measuring

This is probably a naive FTM question, but how is everyone getting LO measured and finding out percentiles, growth rates, etc.?

I had my anatomy scan at 20w, and they gave us percentiles then, but the only thing that's happened since is a doctor's appt where they weighed me. Dr didn't measure my belly or otherwise offer any insight into LO's growth. And I haven't had another US, nor will I any time soon. (Actually I don't know if I get another one at all.)

So how is everyone getting this intel on their LO's growth? Or is this something that happens in check-ups when you're further along? I'm an end-of-the-monther (EDD 10/31) so maybe I'm just not there yet?

Re: Stupid question - baby measuring

  • My doctor gave me info at the A/S as well and has been measuring fundal height at every appointment since about 16 weeks. I know that not all doctors do fundal height at every appointment but if they don't offer it next time, I don't see anything wrong with asking for it. It takes all of 5 seconds to get it. We also listen to the heartbeat at every appointment, and that's about it for measurements.

As far as the u/s, I also didn't have another u/s with DS after A/S. I'll have a follow up u/s this time around but only because there are things that we are watching from my A/S, otherwise all u/s would've ended at 21 weeks.

  • I am getting the growth information from U/s done at my MFM which had been happening every three weeks.

I think most OB only look at growth information at the anatomy scan and the once again later in pregnancy between 28-34 weeks.  This varies if you are high risk, have multiples, that kind of thing.

  • My OB measures the fundamental height at every appointment, every 2 weeks. (10/10EDD and high risk due to preemie DS)
I also have monthly US with MFM also due to DS.

  • My doc checks fundal height every appt as well.. when I was pregnant with #2 he offered an ultrasound at 36 weeks to check growth because my first was 10lb6oz and I just wanted a chance to be mentally prepared, even though I know those u/s can be off (which it was pretty well right one, it said about 6lbs, he was born at 40+5 weighing 9lb2oz) :) I think if there was cause for concern your doc would mention something :)
  • Agreed, every OB is def different. My office measures fundal height at every appointment, starting after your A/S. There are no growth scans (or any US for that matter) after the A/S unless medically indicated ((hx big baby, GD, HTN on meds, etc). Or if you go post dates. LIke PP have said, I don't think it hurts to ask for them to measure FH at your next visit.

  • I have monthly ultrasounds due to being high risk (GD). I think those of us that you see posting babies weight and percentile are having frequent ultrasounds for medical reasons.

As for belly measurements my OB does measure that at every appointment for all of their patients. In sure you could ask then to do it for you. It only takes a second.

  • Whenever you have an ultrasound they can measure the baby and give you approximates, I would just ask next time.

  • I have U/S every appt due to being high risk.  Many doctors don't do another U/S after the A/S.  The only way that they know baby's size is ok is based on fundal height measurement and weight gain.  I would ask them to do the fundal height measurement at each appt for your peace of mind.

  • I haven't done any other measurements since the a/s either. My doctor measures fundal height but never says anything. Then he finds the heartbeat and were out the door again.

  • I have experience with 2 midwife groups- my first one started measuring fundal height much earlier (I'd say at my 24ish week appointment).  My current group started measuring at my most recent appointment (I was 27 weeks).  They are confirming that your belly measurement (centimeters) is close to the number of weeks pregnant.  Maybe your doc will start with your next appointment?  I'd definitely ask at your next appointment to see how your doc prefers to do things.  I did not have an u/s after my scan at 19/20 weeks with my first and am expecting that this will be the same with my second unless there is a reason to do another one.

  • Mine also won't do anymore U/S unless there's an issue. I just have my fundal height measured like PP's and the doctor checks the heart rate.

  • Popping in from Sept 14. I had the same question and I just casually asked my doctor at my last appointment if she had any idea how big the baby was or what position she was in and she offered and ultrasound on the spot. Might be worth just asking the doc.
  • Thanks all. Going to ask for fundal height measurements starting at my next appointment. May try to casually hint for an ultrasound at some point, but it's unlikely that'll get me anywhere with my doc since she seems to like to keep appointments as brisk as possible!
