Stay at Home Moms

Would you have said something?

I was at Macy's the other day shopping with my kids and my mom. While I was paying there was another lady at the next cash register arguing about returning some items. DS2 walked around the corner to where she was standing (Maybe 2 feet from me and I could see him the whole time). All the sudden I heard a dog start barking and snapping and DS2 came running toward me. I had no idea the lady had a dog because I couldn't see it or I would have told DS2 to stay away from it. He only walked past it….he did not try to pet it or anything. It was a smallish dog maybe 30 lbs. So I said to the cashier loudly "Why is a non service dog in here?" and she said Macy's is a "pet friendly store" WTF? Annoyed I paid and started to leave and as we were walking out the same dog was snapping, barking and lunging at us while we walked passed. I was so pissed I wanted to talk to the store manager but my mom told me I was being dramatic. That dog could have bit DS2. Would you have said something? BTW- I have a dog and am a dog person but there are some places they just don't belong.

Re: Would you have said something?

  • I would have. But I'm not a dog person and I don't think they belong in stores unless it is a pet store. I'm surprised they didn't say something, though, if he bit someone I'd think they'd be open for a lawsuit.

  • I would've said something to the dog owner, most likely "If you can't keep your yappy fleabag from nipping at my kids, you should probably leave the goddamn thing at home." But I'm nice like that.
  • Yeah, I probably would have. But I also don't agree with non-service dogs in non-pet stores.

  • I agree with Lala.  I am a dog lover, but I hate seeing pets (non-service animals) in non-pet stores.  I am also fine with outside restaurants, as long as the dog is well behaved.

  • I'm not the type to say something cause I'm a wuss but I would have wanted to, does that count? Unless the dog actually hurt my daughter although I'm surprised the lady didn't day something when the dog freaked out. I don't get the point of bringing your dog into Macys of all places. Your dog doesn't need to help you buy anything. Redic.

  • I have an issue with non-service dogs for sure.  My son is allergic to most dogs and the kids are both fearful....I just don't see WHY people would even think they could bring a dog to some of the places they do???   Especially a snippy, snappy dog.  ALso, wtf would Macy's be pet-friendly?????  Gross.

  • I was just having this discussion with my best friend, who is childless but has a small dog. He was talking about how great it is in France with everybody having their dogs under tables in nice restaurants...yeah, that's not great to me.
  • I definitely would have said something. While I like dogs a lot I'm severely allergic, as is my daughter. If dogs are in a store I basically can't go in there. And ewww to a clothing store allowing animals!

Eh, I have a slightly different take on this. I love seeing dogs out in public, as does my LO. I prefer big dogs to little dogs and agree there is probably a double-standard when it comes to them being welcome in stores. But I would LOVE to test it out with my boxer mix.
There is something called a Canine Good Citizen certification. I would rather the policy be that CGC certified dogs are welcome in stores. I am sure there are dog owners that get a kick out of their pocket dogs snarling at people. Not cool. But yeah, I would have said something loudly and critical of/to the dog owner and/or dog itself, more so than the store.
  • I had a similar experience at a BJs once. DD and I were walking and my mother was pushing the carriage and the dog lunged at DD who is petrified of dogs. She was just over a year at the time. I said something to the lady and complained to the costumer service. I had no clue there was a dog in the area. I don't bring my DD around dogs because of how afraid she is of them. The lady was asked to leave.
