Benefits of using Sippy Cup now?

I noticed in my baby week by week book, it said around this time we can introduce Sippy cups. Our baby boy is 23 weeks old. I also saw a thread on here redommending brands. I'm just curious of the benefits of introducing Sippy cups now and what do you put in there? We are formula feeding at the moment and just starting some baby food, just once a day around dinner time for practice. Is it so they are less attached to a bottle? Does it help them learn? Curious, thanks!

    It takes many babies a lot of practice before they learn to use a cup. So you start early so they have plenty of time before you want to wean off the bottle.

    You can just put a couple of ounces of water in it. You will probably find that hardly any gets drunk.

    So 23 week old baby is about 5-5.5 months old.

    Math gives me a headache

    I lost track of weeks around the 8wk mark, returned to work then so it was really counting down time off not LO's age.

    Thanks... reason I posted in weeks is because the whole Sippy cup thing...I read in the "week by week" book.
