speech therapy question

So B has been involved with First Steps for almost a year. He's really done great with OT and he likes his therapist. We just started speech 3 months ago and haven't really seen any improvement. I'm not exactly sure what to expect though. All our ST does is bring sensory bins like our OT does. Shouldn't she be doing more? His geneticist wants us to seek private ST and we will once our new insurance kicks in, but I just feel like we should be seeing at least some kind of improvement, right?

Re: speech therapy question

  • I don't know what your diagnosis is, but my DS1 has been in speech for 2 years and still has 0 wordsl.

DS2 has been in speech for 6 months and has 0 words.  It's basically they use a lot of sensory toys to help them focus on muscle use and play with sounds, etc.  they do a lot of play and reading.  trying simple word shapes, boo, moo, zoo

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

  • He doesn't have a diagnosis yet. We are working towards one, but nothing so far. They did get him a z vibe for feeding issues.
  • What are his speech goals in the IFSP?

  • They never wrote us a new one. The original one was just for OT things. I will ask if they have a new copy and just didn't us it. However, I do remember discussing how we needed to hear consonant sounds since all we get from him are ahhh ehhh sounds.

Start here. The SLP has to work toward the goals you set. Reopen the IFSP and get what you want in writing. Needs drive goals, goals drive services. In the meantime, talk to her and ask her to please explain what they're working on. You should have homework to carry over between sessions.

  • We have a diagnosis of apraxia (no comorbids diagnosed) and have been in speech every 2 weeks since November 2013. The change for us has been night and day...he talks almost non stop. He absolutely has multiple articulation errors but was recently accepted into a special needs preK program, which I think will be amazing for him. I am hoping many of the speech issues are resolved by kindie (he's three so has two years til kindie starts).
  • Thanks everyone. Hopefully once we start private, we will see more of an improvement. I seriously long to hear him say Mommy.
