3rd Trimester

Induction at 38 weeks

I know it may seem a little selfish, but I was wondering if it would be a possibility if my doctor would induce me at 38 weeks. This is my first child and my main problems are my knees ankles and hips popping out of socket and elevated blood pressure. Any advice would be appreciated. I go to the doctor next week and just wanted some kind of advice before I brought it up to him... Thanks all!

  • BTW, you're not even full term.
  • Barring an actual medical issue a responsible doctor will not induce you at 38w. In my case we were dealing with borderline pre-e, possible IUGR & borderline cord blood flow. We had increased monitoring and knew any appointment after 36w could've resulted in being sent directly to the hospital. Even with all that my OB didn't induce until 39w4d. I know you're uncomfortable, but inducing right now is not the best solution.

  • I think in the initial post I failed to clarify my main reasons for asking. Yes, I am uncomfortable, but that is to be expected. The knee, hip and ankle problems have caused me to fall multiple times and resulted in two concussions. Also the high blood pressure has caused other health problems (according to the dr. it has caused thinning and dilation of the cervix) And to add, I also have a multitude of other medical problems that could cause complications. I think i failed to clarify this in my original post. The reason for asking isn't for my own personal comfort but to see if it would be a good idea, for not only my health but my daughter's as well. Still I do appreciate any advice.
  • Agree with sparkle... If you have all those issues, your doctor will bring up induction. If he doesn't, it probably means that he doesn't think you need it it.

Maybe take your leave early if you can? My friend did that because at 38 weeks work got to be too much for her.

  • Like PP's suggested, can you start maternity leave early or get put on bed rest? It's much better for your LO for you to go into labor naturally when he/she is ready.

  • This is definitely a conversation you need to have with your doctor.  Also, if they haven't put you on bed rest, maybe you should put yourself on bed rest and try to take it easy!  Watch movies, read books, and rest because soon that won't be as much of an option.
  • You need to wait... baby needs another week or two to bake. I was induced at 39 weeks due to pre eclampsia and let me tell you, inductions suck! The contractions are much stronger with no breaks in between. The last few weeks are so ridiculously uncomfortable and I can completely relate to you wanting to deliver early but you need to just hang on a little longer.

.... Isn't your cervix supposed to be thinning and dilating? That doesn't sound like a health problem, it sounds like your body preparing for labor.

Your doctor knows your medical history and if he thinks you should induce to avoid complications I am sure he would bring it up. I wouldn't elect to induce without trying first to do other things to correct those problems.

High Blood pressure doesn't cause thinning and dilation of the cervix. Sorry, but it doesn't. And if you have multiple other medical problems that are causing you to fall and get concussions, then it seems your doctor is an idiot for not putting you on bedrest.

Sorry, but its a get over it type of thing. I have pre-e, and have had it each pregnancy... and my doctor didn't induce me with my daughter until my blood pressure was in stroke levels. And I was 38w4d with her. Now the ACOG doesn't even consider full term until 39 weeks, and until there is a true medical emergency will they induce then. You have 2 weeks left... deal with it.
