If you wear your baby...

What are your thoughts on the forward facing holds?  Do you do it in your Moby?  Ergo?

I have read some differing things about forward facing, that it's not as supportive to LO and that it can be over-stimulating.  I have a Moby and an Ergo, but neither shows videos on how to forward face (that I can find) on line.

Yesterday I was wearing LO when I took both girls to the aquarium.  She started freaking out because she wanted to see the fish, I guess!  As soon as I let one side of the Ergo down and held her, she was happy, and so I put her in the stroller and she loved it.  So last night I wore her forward facing around the house, in the Moby, while I did my evening chores and she seemed to dig it.

Maybe a side or hip hold is the answer.

Experiences?  Input?  Feedback?

Im a FTM so I'm new to baby wearing. We use a ring sling. Lily loves to face out, so if we're at home every now & then I'll face her out in a kangaroo carry, but only for a few minutes at a time. When we're out in public we do a hip carry because she prefers that over tummy to tummy.
  • I might try it soon. I have the Ergo 360 which allows you to forward face safely. At the grocery store today, she was facing inward and kept pushing against me to try to look around more. I forgot about hip carry though so maybe I'll try that too!

Do the hip carry in the Ergo. I found the easiest was to watch online videos of how to do it

Honestly am I missing something w the ring along? I bought one and my lo almost always slides herself out. What am I missing?

I struggled with mine at first with DS1. It took a couple of different people showing me and lots of practice to stop the slide. How are you trying to use it? Are you making a big pouch with it or snugging the material under LO's butt/legs to make a seat? I'm no expert but I might be able to help. I've been using mine a lot now for Keira since it's easier to drag along and put on in stores and she must be carried.

  • I wear Charlie facing out in the beco gemini and the Bjorn. He prefers those carries to the Ergo. The Gemini is great because it offers so much flexibility... You can do front, hip, and I think back carry, too, and it lets you adjust the base width.

How are their feet suppose to be positioned in the ring sling? I can get her in but I feel like her feet are all contorted and she isn't comfortable.

Are you trying to put her in a pouch or a seat? Keira gets like that when I try to make a pouch. What I've been doing is making a seat with the bottom rail and making sure the fabric covers her entire bottom from knee to knee and that her butt is lower than her knees, making the seat. That way her legs seem to rest naturally against me, where she's constantly stretching them out in a pouch.

I''m going to try side carry on both - you can certainly use the Ergo for this and I'm pretty sure Moby, as well.  to be honest, my lower back issues have been flaring up something awful with front carries in both lately, so maybe the side will help that.

As for back/high back - love the idea, but how is this possible w/o another adult to help?  I know my toddler could do it, 'cause she can hold on while I strap in but my baby is not quite 4 months.

Thanks ladies, this is a great sounding board.

ETA - spelling.  Wine makes it tricky

  • @Jt7dreamz‌ - we have the same problem with the ring sling! He's finally big and strong enough to carry with him in a seated position rather than in the pouch. Except he likes to be completely straight so he straightens his legs really tight and just slips right out of the sling. I have been using it for a while and think I'm pretty competent with it but I'm not sure how to handle this one.
  • Does anyone have any suggestions on woven wraps? I'm very interested in getting one. Are they breathable in warmer climates? Where could I get a reasonably priced used one?

If you are on FB, join the Babywearing on a Budget group. Everything must be $100 or less. Since woven wraps can go for way more than that, it's a good place to start!

A hip carry is a great way for baby to see out but both of you still be comfortable!

Re: ring sling. Make sure the bottom rail is spread knee to knee then you can reach into the sling and take the fabric under their bum and pull it up so it comes between you and baby.  Does that make sense?

  • I forward face with my LO since she was 14 weeks old in the Ergo 360 and she loves it. She has had really good neck control for a while though.

The Ergo 360 is the only carrier I'm comfortable having LO forward face in.

I have a Little Frog woven, and they are very reasonably priced.  I got a 4.6 for $70, and it is a really beautiful, soft wrap.  Mine is 100% cotton and is very thick, so it's warm when it's hot.  They do have one that is a linen blend which I imagine would be cooler, but if you're in a really warm place, you'd probably want to find something more lightweight.

  • @mommyKT310‌ - I just got a girasol (little pricey but it was a gift). It's not too thick but I know I couldn't wear it in really warm weather. I also have a baby k'tan, which is sooooo hot, so watch out for that stretchy cotton material. When I was researching wraps, ellaroo and another brand that started with a V were recommended for hot climates. The ellaroo's are about $100 new for a size 6 (standard) but you can order them on amazon which is a plus. You could also get a shorter wrap and use carries that don't need multiple layers, which will make them cheaper.

As for forward carrying, I tried it a couple times in the k'tan, which kinley seemed to like, but it looked so uncomfortable. Once I'm more comfortable using my wrap, I'm going to try a high back carry for her to be able to look around.

Just to elaborate, the hip carry is better than a forward carry bc baby's legs are still frogged and they have the ability to bury their face in mommy when they are feeling overstimulated. Their back and torso are fully supported unlike in a front carry where baby's body is arched in an unsupported fashion. There are other reasons too, but when wearing baby (especially as young as our LOs), I would encourage you to look at baby's legs to see if they are frogged and baby's body to see if it can basically be wrapped around you including the ability to nuzzle in. LO should not be dangling from your body. I don't even know how they can fall asleep front facing? Q loves to fall asleep in the carrier and I would be concerned about the airway and lack of neck support if they fall asleep forward facing. Again, not trying to sound like a know-it-all by any means, but trying to pass along some info since I'm an OT.

My son won't fall asleep while he's being carried no matter what position he is in, and I have numerous carriers and have tried numerous positions. Also, when facing me in the Ergo, he cries every time I have to spread his legs so far apart to wrap around me. This is an 'all babies are different' situation, and just because it might be best for your kid, it's not the case for all.

@katykatykaty‌ what do you mean when you said this: (I can't figure out how to just quote/bold one part when mobile)

Also, when facing me in the Ergo, he cries every time I have to spread his legs so far apart to wrap around me.

His legs shouldn't wrap around you. He can be knee to knee and his legs still in front like this.

  • That's what I mean... He looks just like that, but he hates it when I spread his legs apart like that. He much prefers the Gemini with the narrow base or the Bjorn.

If he's complaining when you spread his legs, he may still be too little to use the Ergo like that without the insert.

  • Feedback? I tried a side carry but he started crying after just a minute or so, so then I tried a front carry.... Never felt quite secure enough? And his face was right at the rings at one point....He may just need exposure to it to like it, I was carrying him the same way I typically hold him

He's 18 lbs and over 26", so I don't think it's a size thing. I guess my baby prefers hip dysplasia over inward carrying.

  • I have ergo 360. Not sure how I'm feeling about forward. She doesn't always look comfortable so each time I try a little something different. If she's tired I turn her towards me. Haven't tried hip carry but will look into it
  • @FFwifey - I need your professional thoughts. Very early on I was told by our OT not to spread his legs while carrying him. To make sure they were tucked under him so that he develops the correct hip positioning. I have also been told he has good muscle tone and his joints aren't too loose. We haven't seen an OT since those first 3 weeks and I'm still paranoid about carrying. Since he's gotten so much bigger I need to carry him with his legs spread.

We start seeing an OT again (and a PT and ST) in the next couple of weeks, but do you have any thoughts on this? Do you think it's ok to carry him with legs spread as in the pictures above?
  • FFwifey said:
@babylimas‌ did will have low tone at the time and how big was he? How big is he now?
He has lower tone than is typical, but pretty high for a baby with DS. He was 5 lbs at birth and was probably a bit under 5 lbs when I last saw the OT. He should be over 10 now, but we haven't weighed in about a month.
  • That is such awesome help! Thank you! I actually have a friend trying to get rid of her k'tan right now. So I will hit her up. Will doesn't particularly like the woven wrap or the ring sling these days, so maybe he would like that one. Both of them have to be so tight on his back to keep him from slipping out, and he can't stand bring so restrained. I know with my friend's k'tan, it seems a bit more comfortable in that regard. Thank you!!!

And I actually just got in with a PT after trying for months. Our first session is on Monday, so I can check with her too.

  • @missfunball  How long did it take you to perfect that hold? I have been working on it but haven't been very successful

eta: to add....i'm not sure why my formatting is all messed up
It's a little messier to do. I started off just in the house and mirrored it. The ke is to tuck part of it under their bum so it doesn't move and spread towards the knee. I adjust the first part as much as I can but usually have to do it again when I get the second part up. This position definitely takes a little more time

  • SO I have tried the side carry in my regular Ergo and also the Moby and I don't know what I'm doing wrong but neither one seems to work :(

With the Ergo I just have a huge strap laying across the side of my neck which is totally uncomfortable the whole time and with the Moby, once she is in it doesn't seem much different than the front hug hold - she can't see out that much more.

I have watched a million videos on Youtube this week for both and just can't seem to make it work, super frustrating!  May just wait until LO is a little bigger and do the high back carry.

I HATE hip carries in a SSC with all of them you will have a strap laying across your side of your neck. I would recommend a ring sling, but it seems like some are having issues with adjustment. One key item to remember with a ring sling is the make sure that it is threaded properly. This will make a huge difference in adjustment and fit. Here is a good video.
