Name spelling

I think we have decided on Madelyn Josephine as the name, but wondering your opinions on the spelling. I prefer "Madeline," but don't want two "ine" names back to back. What do you think? Josephine is the middle name regardless, a family name, but other first name options are welcome ;-).

ETA: I'd like it pronounced Mad-uh-lin, if that helps choose a spelling.

  • I don't pronounce them the same, so it depends on how you want it said. Madelyn rhymes with Lynn. Madeline rhymes with line.

Like PPs have said, they are different names. I prefer Madeline, but if you are going for the "lyn" pronunciation, I'd spell it Madelyn.

I agree with PP that to me they are different names. In terms of the two names I prefer lyn to line.

I can't even believe I am saying this because I always pick the most popular spelling, but I like it spelled Madilyn. I am probably biased though because that is how one of my friends spells her daughter's name.

  • Have never seen the spelling Madelyn before here (NY and PA), and always assume Madeline is a soft i unless corrected.

I have also always known Madeline to be a soft i, pronounced lynn.  And the French spelling of Madeleine is what I've known to be pronounced "line."

  • Yeah I see Madeline as a soft I also (NY) and prefer it. I lump Madelyn with Madison and all the other more trendy names. I see Madeline as classic and don't see any issue pairing it with Josephine.

Agree with this. I typically prefer the most common spellings of things, but I also like Madilyn Josephine. (I instead of E in the first name.)
  • Huh. That's one of our top names and we both say it as lyn... Crap. You'll almost never see her full name together, I wouldn't do a different spelling just because of that.

  • Madeline. I'm always in favor of the original, classic name.

    ...That's why we're spelling our LO's name with 2 L's and 2 T's (Elliott).

  • My 2 year old is Madeline (pronounced -Lynn). We chose that spelling because it's the classic spelling and we felt like it will grow with her better than the more trendy Madelyn spelling. In two years, only one person has pronounced it -Line and everyone else has known it's pronounced -Lynn.
