  I had this dilemma,too. Amazon baby registry was very helpful and I ended up using it since it was so simple. Free delivery, anyone can look at it and choose what they want to get you, most of the prices are the best available, and the best part- it has suggestion categories where all the different types of gear are listed. For example : cribs, bathing, clothing, diapering, furniture, etc. The hardest part was picking a carseat/stroller combo. I wanted one that could adjust from newborn to 50 lbs so I wouldn't have to buy a new set every few months. Also, the user reviews are premium! oh, and it keeps track of the gifter so you will know who to send thank you cards to!

  Well there are things that are necessary and things people like to have lol.
  
  For example you will want a crib, and can save yourself money by getting one that converts into a toddler bed, a bassinet isn't necessary and many babies barely if ever use them. 
  You will also need a carseat and stroller,  you can decide for yourself if you want a travel system(which is the infant carseat/stroller combo) or if you want to start right with a convertible car seat and buy a separate stroller.
  Also you may want to buy a few different brands of bottles, different bottles have different types of nipples and some babies may prefer one kind to another.
  If you plan on breastfeeding but will be bottle feeding then you will need a breast pump
  Get pacifiers if you are planning on using them. 
  Get some simple clothing like onesies, pants, sleepers
  Swing and bouncer,  babies usually like these
  Changing tables are another thing thats more of a preference, I never used it with my daughter, only for storage really,  and didnt even bother buying one with my son, though some people use them a lot.
  You will also want to have some type of baby bathtub along with baby shampoo, lotion and diaper cream.  don't forget to have wash clothes, hooded towels and a baby brush/comb and nail clippers
  If you are going to use disposable diapers than you probably wanna get at least a couple packs size newborn and size one depending on how big your baby is expected to be.  Also wipes, I recommend getting unscented ones to avoid any skin irritation.
  You're also going to want to have some regular blankets, some receiving blankets, swaddling blankets.
  
  The above items will get you through the first several months at least.  But since you are have a registry don't be afraid to put items on that you will need/want later on, like a high chair or safety items like baby gates. 
  
  When I had my daughter I used my registry for the items she will truly need and then used my money to her extra things that I wanted her to have, like toys and a playmat.
  
  I have my son due in a few weeks and I didn't have a baby shower or do a registry this time I bought everything myself. 
  
  But there is nothing wrong with putting everything you want your child to have on the registry,  after all anything people don't buy you can always get yourself if you still need/want it.

  Word to the wise from a STM.  I advise everyone against travel systems.  They are big and bulky.  This time around I got the Chicco car seat (we had the same brand with DD) and the frame the seat snaps into.  It is so much smaller and light weight.  We only used the travel system stroller for a short while because it was big.  We we will transition from the snap in car seat/stroller frame, right to the umbrella stroller with DS.  

  
  

  I second the following suggestions made by PP.  Amazon for the registry.  If you don't like an item most times there are free returns.

  Here is my must have list: crib, 2 crib sheets, changing pad and 2 covers, infant car seat, ergo carrier with infant insert, umbrella stroller, bouncy seat, play mat with toy bar, 8 newborn sleepers with feet, 8 3-6 month sleepers with feet, 8 bibs, one pack cloth diapers for burp cloths, 6 receiving blankets, one stroller blanket for car seat, 8 playtex drop ins 8oz bottles with newborn nipples, 4 big boxes of playtex drop ins liners, breast pump, bottle cooler for diaper bag, breast milk storage bags, diaper bag with changing pad, around 200 newborn and size one diapers, as many size 2 diapers as I can get, sound baby monitor, baby bath seat (not a bath tub), big box of baby wipes refills, 1 regular box baby wipes, 2 big bottles baby shampoo, 1 tube diaper rash cream. This is almost everything I want to get to hopefully get us through 12 weeks maternity leave. There are a lot of "must haves" that I am not getting because I just didn't use them with my other two babies.

  Everything I was going to suggest has already been mentioned, so I won't put you through having to read a pointless post, but I will add one thing: 

  
  

  When my husband and I registered, they were really helpful at both Buy Buy Baby and Babies R Us in providing us information on what to register for. I'm sure every individual store is different depending on the employees who work there, but they were great at ours in lending suggestions whenever we asked. 

  
  

  One helpful piece of advice: Remember that your registry is just a list of suggestions for people who may decide to send you a gift, so don't stress about adding too many things or items that you won't definitely use. If you change your mind about a specific item that had been on your registry, you can always return it for credit and get whatever you ultimately decide on instead. As a FTM myself, I can understand feeling overwhelmed by it all.

  If you register in store, many stores provide a checklist.  

  
  

  Also, you don't have to register all at once.  I think I made three trips to BRU and still adjusted my registry online.

  For us, the rock n play was the number one thing we could not have done without. Bc it was so great we never used the bassinet/co sleeper or pack n play.
  
  Sound machine, plain cloth diapers (just for burp cloths-they are the best and you don't care if they get stained), boppy and dr Brown bottles were all great for us.
  
  I totally agree with pp about travel systems being way too bulky. The snap in foldable option was way more practical when you're out and dont have extra hands.
  
  We got a lot of clothes and blankets and cute stuffed things so maybe you dont need to register for those. I find that a lot of friends without kids got us that kind of fun but less practical stuff.
  
  Also good to get expensive things- or all things- gender neutral so you dont have to replace them if you have a second that's the opposite.
  
  Have fun! Registering for your first is so exciting! :-)

  Alex has arrived! 9 pounds, 21 inches - 3 weeks early on March 2nd ~went natural - very intense. whew!~
