Mombo,Boppy or best friend pillow?

I am interested in buying one of these pillows. I was told that they are used for nursing and tummy time but not sure for what else. I would like to know your opinon on which one you prefer and why. I am probably not going to breast feed so should I still get one and if I do what can i use it for. Thanks in advance.

Re: Mombo,Boppy or best friend pillow?

  • I actually got the one at walmart by Leachco(sp?) .  It looks just like a boppy but has a strap so baby can lay in the middle and be strapped in. I used it a lot like that with DS when he was sleeping.

If you're planning to at least try breastfeeding, my recommendation is the breastfriend pillow. It provides back support and is more stiff than the others. I LOVED it while I was getting the hang of breastfeeding (in the beginning, you feel like you need 8 hands!).

If you don't intend to breastfeed at all, a boppy (or another boppy product for baby...check out their website) may still be useful to you for tummy time and propping baby occasionally once he/she gains head control.

  • Has anyone gotten the "free" version from the same company that does the leggings, car seat covers, etc.? I did, and it seems fine, but I was wondering how a boppy compares, so I still have a boppy on my registry. The one I have seems to be small, like it wouldn't fit around my waist. And I was a size 6 before, so I wasn't super big (but I carried my weight in my middle). Does the boppy go around your waist? Isn't that the point, or am I an idiot?

  • @FamousEA I'm wondering if this pillow I have is just the same size as a boppy then and it won't really fit around me, either. I saw the Boppy in Target the other day, but they are all boxed/bagged up, and I didn't want to like, rip into it, right there in the store. I should smuggle my pillow in and at least hold it up to the boppy in the store.

I don't want a Boppy in addition if they are basically the same thing.

There are way too many options for these pillows! I was almost sold on the new double-sided Boppy, but then I read that it's sometimes too tall for petite mothers. I looked at the Leachco pillow long and hard, and I'm also considering Dr. Brown's Gia pillow. If I got a Brest Friend, I'd probably have to cut off the part that goes behind your back; I think that would drive me nuts.

  • I've only used the boppy and loved it, but to be honest I found it most useful for BFing.  I did use it to prop DD up once she was a few months old, but depending on your budget and space, it may not be worth it to buy one for this reason alone.

  • I had a boppy. I used the same one for two kids and never had a deflating/flattening issue personally. I mainly bottle fed. With both girls - pumped for Sophie and Formula for Gabby. I loved using the boppy for tummy time or just support propping them next to me for a bit. I liked it and will probably use it again (a new one because I think I passed it to my SIL) but I never used anything else so I couldn't speak to comparisons.
  • I ordered the 'free' pillow and got it yesterday. It is small, so we are still planning on getting the breast friend pillow, but it will be nice to have an extra pillow that we can keep upstairs or take with us to grandmas that sort of thing.

I started with a boppy because someone gave it to me. I absolutely hated that thing. It never stayed in place. It never fit right when I was trying different nursing holds.  I am plus size, but even my skinny friends hated it.

About 3 months into breast feeding someone gave me the breast friend pillow and it is the most amazing thing ever.  @MrsL2B the back part is actually really great, it is very soft and gives lumbar support so you don't slump while breast feeding.   Because I could strap the breast friend pillow around me I could place it either high on my torso or lower and it would stay in place.  At one point I would walk around with DS1 on it nursing while I did stuff around the house.  I would use one arm to curl around him and the edge of the pillow and it was like he was on a shelf. I am slightly ashamed to admit I even figured out how to go pee while wearing the breast friend and nursing.
All of this for me too!  Well, except for the peeing part ;)  I was never that brave.  I got the Boppy with DS#1, because that's what everyone recommended.  I hated it.  It took forever to get it in the right place, and then once I was trying to get DS nursing (we had major latch issues and eventually went to EP) it would move out of position.

With DS#2 I got the brestfriend pillow on the recommendation of an LC and it was the best thing ever!  I too thought that the back piece would drive me nuts, but it was actually such a help.  It really helped me maintain my posture so that I didn't kind of 'slump' over him, but also helped support my lower back when I was nursing while reclined.  I absolutely loved that I could strap it on and it wouldn't move from where ever I placed it.  I lent it to a friend who had a c-section and she said it was great because it meant that she could place it where it wouldn't bother her incision and she could relax knowing that it wouldn't slip and cause her pain.  Just something to think about!

  • @FamousEA I already have it, I was asking the opposite--if the Boppy was better. It seems like, according to @pnwlover12 it is small, as I thought it might be, so the Boppy stays on the registry, I suppose.

  • @SPurp13‌ I have the "free one" it seems pretty small I'm honestly not sure it's all that different from the boppy. I've thought about sitting on it a while to see if it stretches out some. I still have the boppy on my registry too just in case I hate it.

  • @MrsBabe614, Well, then we're in the same boat. Dunno what to do. I took out the old one, today and it does go around my waist (what little there is left of one) but I just felt like I thought the Boppy was larger. I have no idea.

  • I used regular pillows. The Boppy didn't prop DS up where I needed him to be to nurse. I did use it for tummy time occasionally, but if it hadn't been given to me, I would have felt like it was a waste of money.
  • I prefer the boppy over any of the others....The breast friend pillow is cumbersome to put on for me and I like simple...just sit down and stuff a pillow under...the boppy does this best for me. I also found the surface of the breast friend pillow was too firm and it always felt like baby was going to roll off if I didn't keep a firm hand at all times...with the boppy they kind of sink in a bit more and it conforms to them better.

I thought it was pretty similar in size. My SIL has the Boppy and hers is now all lumpy and stretched out! I don't have much a waist left either ;-) I can't get it around my "waist" haha the breast friend is sounding more like a nice alternative though...

  • I loved mybreastfriend for breastfeeding- I rarely clipped mine, but found that it really helped support our son and helped me stay in a good position while nursing.  It is one of the only baby products that we used a ton.

I believe that there is another pillow on the market that is similar, but doesn't include the back part (I think it is this one- https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3190431&cp=2255957.2273443.2255981.2256168&parentPage=search).  I had a few mommy friends try it and they said that it worked well.

I also have a boppy and used it mostly for tummy time and to set LO in while I  went to the bathroom. I believe that the older boppys are softer and are harder to use, but the newer ones are a little more firm and work a little better for nursing.  I used it more for nursing when my son was older (like over 6 mo).

If you aren't planning on breastfeeding, you could get a boppy lounger or one of the other lounger type pillows.
