TTC After a Loss

Pesky little cyst

During my pregnancy, doc discovered an ovarian cyst.  Post m/c, doc wanted to check the progress of the cyst to see if it was still there or if it has dissolved after the m/c.  Went back 4 weeks post m/c and he said the cyst looked a little flattened out, but still the same size (6 cm.)  Going back this Wednesday for another checkup to see if its still there.
*Note: I never had any symptoms of this cyst before it was discovered and still don't.  The only way we knew about it was b/c of our 8 wk. u/s.
If it still shows no signs of shrinking, Doc wants to talk surgery.  I'm uneasy about this because I don't want to have surgery.  I had my first AF post m/c and it was pretty normal (a little heavier than usual, but not by much.)
I don't know much about cysts since this is my first one, but my thought is if it's not harming anything, then let it be.  Anyone else have experience or advice to offer??
DH and I want to start trying again soon and doc told us not to until we get this cyst thing settled.  I feel like this stupid cyst is preventing us from moving forward.  Like I can't put my m/c behind me because I'm still having to go to this doc for checkups. (btw I plan to switch drs. for my next pregnancy b/c I was not pleased at all with this one.  The only reason I'm still going to him is because he has my chart and he knows what is going on with me now).  Going back to the same office that I went to after I lost my precious baby puts another knife in my chest each time I go.

  • Do you know what type of cyst it is? Some are more harmful/serious than others.

  • No experience here with cysts but hope it resolves itself quickly! I would definitely ask lots of questions about how (if at all) it can affect your pregnancy if you choose not to have the surgery. Good luck!!

  • Thanks.  My Dr. doesn't offer a lot of information - one reason I'm not going back to him once this is over.  I have to drag information out of him.  He has never explained to me possibilities that I have a cyst or why he feels surgery would be necessary if it hasn't resolved on it's own.  I'm a big believer in letting the body do what it does.  If there is any chance that this can resolve on it's own, I want to give my body the opportunity to do it.  Thanks for the post - it gives me a lot to think about and some questions to ask doc next time I see him. (you are right it's not what I want to hear, but it is what I need to hear)

If I was you I would go to the new dr and have your chart sent over there. Get a second opinion. If he's not giving you what you need and you want to leave anyway, just go :)

  • I am sorry for your loss.  I am currently dealing with a cyst and it all sucks.  I think my doctor gave me too much information (which is good) including natural and medicated ways to deal with it.  I choose the medicated (i.e. fastest option).  If you feel your doctor is withholding go get a second opinion now, especially before you TTC again.  My doctor told me depending on the type of cyst, it could affect implantation (something with hormone levels).  I also would not push it but try and get it resolved soon, I have friends who have had cysts rupture and it did not look like a fun experience.
  • I'd get a second opinion.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. I have been in a similar situation after a loss. I was reluctant to have surgery so my doc put me on 2 cycles of birth control and it resolved completely.

  • I had an ovarian cyst a few years back. My OB sent me to an Gynecological Oncologist. I had laparoscopic surgery to get it removed. I agree with PP that you should get a second opinion. PM me if you have any questions about the surgery. It is still VERY fresh in my mind. GL!
  • Oh and just an add on: I didn't know I had a cyst either, I though I just had uti's a lot. Mine was measured to be 9cm (I think) and they waited a month to see if it changed, and when it didn't that's when I was sent to G.O.
