Gas pain = heartbreak

My first night dealing with gas pain. I am only just holding it together because I finally got some big farts after bending her knees for her and tummy rubs and she's going to sleep now but I think I'll have a big stress releasing cry when I finally can.

This was/is heartbreaking!!

Tips for dealing with gas anyone?

  • First time?!? We do this every. single . night :/

  • I don't hesitate to use anti- gas drops. I also rub her belly in a circular motion and bicycle her legs. The colic hold works well for us too. Anything that puts comfortable pressure on her stomach.

  • Per the pedi, we use gas drops in every bottle. She said that's the way to get maximum effectiveness.

  • We are battling with this more now than ever. Smh....poor LO. I'm going to try gas drops.

I just had to use gas drops for DD tonite :( That pained cry is so sad! But at least the drops help.

  • Tip: I learned if you rub your LO's belly Clockwise (when facing them) that helps to move the gas bec that is the way the large intestine flows and it will be more efficient/move the gas more quickly. Hope that helps!
  • @mamamael is right - clockwise massage does help. My LO has gas pains every night, and 2 nights ago it was bad enough that I cried as I held him. I hate knowing that he's in pain. I'm putting some serious thought into getting gas drops for him, even though our doctor said it wouldn't be necessary. I'll do whatever I can to help him feel better.

  • I second the massage. We also started probiotics per our pedi a week or so ago. She seems to be struggling with it less now!
  • We sometimes do a warm bath. If she's too ape shit with crying I will heat up my rice bag so it's luke warm to put on her belly.

  • We've battled this since LO was born. It's awful!!! We tummy rub, bicycle, colic hold, bounce and use gas drops in her bottle. We are also using probiotics but I ran out and have to get to the store ASAP because she seems miserable.
  • Yay! Gas drops are making a HUGE difference!! Doing a happy dance with everyone is asleep! :P

I'm glad to know I'm not alone with the every night gas pains. Does your LO rustle around all night? I feel so bad bc I don't think my baby gets a good sleep but maybe once a werk. Restless all night long, I know it cant be healthy ?
  • @WifeofaComposer‌ also when your LO has gas pains does he/she stiffen body and arch back? My baby was doing this so I took her in and the doctor thought it was reflux, she seemed better for 3 days now back to same stuff so I'm thinking its not reflux anymore
  • I don't think gas drops worked for us but probiotics definitely has. Make sure you get the ones that have to be refrigerated and it may take a week or two but it has made a world of difference for us!

I know this wasn't directed at me but YES! Sprout would writhe and squirm and grunt all night. It's lessened now that we have her on probiotics.

@SmallCityLiving - what brand do you use? Our pedi gave us Culterelle kids (that's non-refrigerated) and it's been working fine, but I've heard the refrigerated ones are better from several folks.

@khammond3 - Yes, my poor LO wiggles and thrashes in his sleep sometimes, and he always gets very rigid and arches his back when the bubbles get really painful. He poops 2-3 times every night, and as soon as those poops come out he instantly relaxes and sleeps. I hate changing his diaper because it disturbs his much needed sleep, and then it takes me a few minutes to calm him down by breastfeeding, which then leads to more gas because it's not a full feed. It's a frustrating, vicious cycle. He doesn't have reflux - he rarely spits up. He has a tendency to fall asleep while nursing, so a lot of the time he's only getting foremilk and that makes him very windy. He refuses every pacifier we've tried, so he comfort nurses on me. I'm hoping he'll sleep better when we start giving him actual food, but that's still 3 months away. I hope our LOs get the hang of deliberate farting soon to relieve those cramps.

  • @rogue237 We use the Natren Life Start brand. I got them at our local Nature Tyme if you have one near you.
  • Got some gas drops, did some bicycle movements and lots of tummy rubbing and my smiley happy girl has returned.

    Ladies, I thank you!

  • Has anyone noticed that the probiotics are causing looser stool? DS is EBF and has been having poops with almost no kernels. Could be the gas drops, too.

My LO never has seedy poops anymore. Is that normal? Her poops are slimy too
  • Gripe Water!! Has saved us numerous times. We buy the Mommy's Bliss brand from Walgreens. I can actually feel the bubbles in her stomach disappear within seconds of giving it to her.
