3rd Trimester

37 week ultrasound-baby looks deformed?

I had my 37 week 3D ultrasound today. The tech said she was up against the placenta and far down, so getting a good pic would be difficult. Looking at the pics we did end up getting, it looks slightly to me like she has a cleft lip? I specifically asked my doctor about it and he said they would've known about that from the 20 week anatomy ultrasound and that she doesn't have a cleft lip. My doctor has been doing this for 24 years so it's not like I don't trust him or think I know better, but I'm just so paranoid. Any other opinions?

  • Awe thanks guys, you've been so nice and helpful!!
  • My ultrasound place said they would not give out pictures at 37 weeks because it's too cramped in there to get any more decent pics.. if you LO had a cleft lip they would have known much earlier.. try to relax and trust your doctor.

  • Cleft lip would have been found at the anatomy scan at 20 weeks, at this point anything could be causing that "deformaty" I've had pictures which the umbilical cord got in the way, where the tech was trying to edit out her hand on her face leaving her to look like there's a hole in her head, even fluid around her face made her look weird.

  • It looks like a shadow to me.
  • Thanks very much, I was hopeful that there were other parents out there who had experienced something similar and could offer reassurance. I really appreciate it!
  • Thank you, I don't get it either. I thought this would be a place where moms and moms-to-be could talk and share similar experiences. I'm not an idiot looking for someone to diagnose my baby, lol, I just thought maybe others have experienced similar things at late 3d ultrasounds, and that would make me feel better. They have and I'm grateful for their responses. I had no idea this would be like a topics website lol
  • And clearly your opinion, regardless of how rude & negative it may be, must be REALLY important because you keep on offering it. I think you're wasting my time and yours. Thanks for your wise input, if only there were more gems like you in this world.
  • I'll sure try to word my posts better to your liking!

I swear some women on here are just out to make people feel bad. I don't think your question was crazy...you are just looking for other opinions. Of course you trust your doctor, but you just wanted a little extra reassurance. People can be so rude!

I am sure everything is ok...things are so cramped in there right now! Good luck with everything :)

I'm sure you mean well but why offer reassurance like this when you have NO idea what is going on with this woman and her baby?

I'm all about trying to be supportive but on things like this, she should really just listen to her doctor or a trained professional. It would suck for her to listen to a bunch of strangers blow smoke up her ass, get her hopes up, then something ends up being wrong..

Seriously?! I am sure that this woman is smart enough to know that I am not a doctor and not to take what I say as true medical advice. I am trying to give her a little encouragement.

  • Your doctor is right on this one. And it's too cramped to tell things like that. Push your face up against a mirror and see if you think you look deformed. That's basically what it's like in there at 37 weeks.

    This is perfect!
  • I hate this term "white knighting," just a way to try to keep others intimidated and in check.

Anyway we had a 3d ultrasound and the cord was in the way and his nose looked all crooked and weird. Can't tell you he is going to come out looking cute to other people but whatever he looks like we're going to hug him and love him. We'll just wait and see. I suspect there's a good bit of distortion in the 3d images.
  • I think someone said this earlier but it looks like a shadow.

LOL.  It took two comments for the butthurt to bubble to the surface.  Unfuckinreal! This post was all about AWing.
  • I worried a lot w the shadows from my ultrasounds. EVEN AFTER I WAS TOLD EVERYTHING WAS FINE! I think it's human nature. Nothing to be mocked or insulted for asking if anyone else has had the same experience or any advice.

Wishing you well!! I bet she's healthy as ever! :)

Why do you keep returning to give rebuttals? Maybe you should listen to your own advice :)
  • Your doctor would have told you this well before 37 weeks. During my A/S the only thing he couldn't see was the upper lip which naturally freaked me out a bit. Next visit he took another look and could tell by the fact that she had a perfectly formed nose that there is no cleft lip. Also, there would have been a shadow in the general mouth area. There is so much more your doctor looks at before making that type of diagnosis other than just the fact that it looks off to you. None of us would be able to tell you, so my advice parrots what has already been said: trust your doctor.

  • Hey Hun even if it is a cleft lip it's a easy fix and not deformed xxx I've worked with cleft bubs and it's not a big deal but don't just go on the ultrasound xx
  • Some of my LO ultrasound pics look like an alien. I doubt I'm giving birth to one.

I was trying to figure out what the hell is an advice parrot. It sounded pretty cool. Then I learned how to read.
Hahaha! I just woke up from a horrifying dream, but this managed to make me laugh. Advice parrot should be a thing.
