s/o 3 year olds

I find i am doing a lot more yelling then i should be. I just seem to lose control after lunch and our day kind of spirles after that. Ds is a good kid most of the time and i don't think i diciplne in the best way for him.

So any book recommendations on parenting preschoolers?

Re: s/o 3 year olds

  • I know it is really dependent on kids and personality and everything--but I find if we raise our voice less and use it as infrequently as possible--it works 100% better. It is really hard to consciously not to yell, but it works. DD was spinning in circles too close to the mantel in our house, we told her to stop and she kept on doing it---DH said it in a sharp, loud voice (not even a yelling) and she just burst into tears and immediately stopped after that.

Like I said, it took me a LONG time to realize what works with her; and DH is just starting to realize the impact of not yelling unless it is a dangerous situation.

Sometimes I whisper if I feel like I'm going to lose it and yell. I think @mandymack‌ recommended a how to talk to your kids book and she had rave reviews.
Amazing book that's easy for ANYONE, not just parents to relate to that does an exceptional job of explaining why what you are doing isn't working and how to do what will work. Simple, common sense, a real reality-check. It's sort of like that book you always wished the hospital would send you home with. :)

  • I love "The Whole Brained Child". Dd's therapist recommended it. The therapist also recommended mandymack's suggestion. That's next on my list.

Ha! I just went to buy this on Amazon but apparently I bought it in April when I'm sure you posted about it in another thread. Still need to read it apparently.
@nowababy oh no, haha looks like it's time to make time to read! ;)

  • Thanks for the tips and recommendations. I am going to get those books out of the library this week. I am also going to try and get a bit more routine into our day and see if that helps get me out from behind the 8 ball.

  • @Leftie22‌ that's really great advice. I wish I had started that sooner. In twbc, it mentions allowing yourself and your child to take such breaks. In fact, it recommends you tell your child, " really frustrated right now so I'm going to relax before we talk about this problem". Most days, it works. Some days I feel like I'm in a looney bin.

  • My DD is 2 and is a good girl for the most part, but has no fear of anything (which scares me the most!!) but I have started to read creative corrections. (Just started) but is really getting me to look at discipline in a whole new light!

I just wanted to say it's nice that this board has so many readers (or at least people intending to be readers) and mindful parents. It's refreshing.
