Pain medication question

So I was wondering what type of pain medication do they prescribe you after labor for pain? Also do they prescribe people who chose to formula feed a stronger pain medication than the people who chose to breast feed? I'm choosing to breast feed, just curious.

Re: Pain medication question

  • I got nothing once I left the hospital. Just told to take Tylenol. I had a complication free, med free birth.

  • @jessea8907 did you tell the doctor you were formula feeding?

I started with Tylenol and Ibuprofen and knew that "something stronger" was ordered if needed. I never needed anything stronger, but I am pretty sure I was told the stronger med was Tylenol and hydrocodone. I know Tylenol and codeine is safe for breast feeding and I think c-sec moms get oxycodone for pain management.

Edit to add: Oh and I don't think it matters whether ur BF or FF.
  • @aab1201‌ well I'm worried I WILL need a stronger medication because I do have a high tolerance when it comes to medications. But I won't be able to because I'm choosing to Bf. I thought it would matter wether or not you BF or FF because people who are FF and able to take stronger medications since they aren't having to monitor what they're eating for their breast milk?
  • @iris427‌ thanks! That about summed it up for me.
  • Also in the Tylenol and Motrin boat. Got a script for something stronger, but to be honest, that stuff scares me so I didn't fill it and didn't think I needed it either. I had 3 stitches and while it's still uncomfortable at times, it isn't unmanageable.

  • I had a c-section and am breastfeeding.  I was given Percocet/Oxy and the 800mg ibuprofin.  I used both for the first few days and then went down to just the ibuprofin as needed.

This. Except the Percocet ended up giving me migraines after taking it for a few days so they also prescribed me something that started with an N that I can't remember right now. They told me that there were a few different things they could give me, so if one didn't work well to ask for something different.

Norco? That's what I was given, but I ended up never opening the prescription bag.

  • @CParker011‌ Yep! It was Norco! I did a little better bit still got a headache but after a couple pills was fine with just the ibuprofen so never investigated if the meds were the cause or something else.

This. I also was given morphine the 1st 2 days.
  • @Aab7114‌ thanks! Exactly the type of answer I was looking for :)
  • I've never heard of someone worried about pain relief AFTER labor, only DURING labor. I had a c-section and after labor I was so happy in the clouds about the baby, it was like natural pain relief.
I did take some kind of narcotic pain medicine in the hospital but just during the first night post surgery. After that it was 600 mg of Ibuprofen.
