If you were dilated before cervadil/cytotec...

If you were induced, or needed cervadil or cytotec during delivery, did your OB choose one or the other based on dilation?
When I was induced with DD, I was barely a fingertip dilated, and still pretty thick, and they placed cervadil. This time around, I'm 3-4cm, really thinned out, and scheduled for induction Sunday night.
Did your OBs give reasoning for choosing one over the other? I found the cervadil to be pretty uncomfortable, so I'm hoping she opts for cytotec, but I'm curious as to everyone else's experiences...

Re: If you were dilated before cervadil/cytotec...

  • I was dilated to 5, and they just used pitocin. Two and a half hours after they started the pitocin, my baby was in my arms. It was super easy and quick.

My first time was with cervadil and the damn foley bulb, it sucked.

This sounds as wonderful as an induction with pitocin CAN sound. When I had my appt Wednesday, I asked the nurse if it would be the same deal as last time, and she said yes, but I don't think she knew what the state of my cervix was. Here's to hoping. Cervadil was balls. Like 12 hours of a tampon that isn't inserted quite right.

  • It was a lovely induction, I didn't want to be induced at all after last time. However, it was exactly the kind of delivery I wanted to have. Hope you luck out too!

  • With my first, I was induced with cervadil. This time they said I'd be induced with cytotec. The change was purely that they started using cytotec over cervadil because it's cheaper. I didn't end up needing the cytotec this time though because I was dilated to 3,5 when I went in, so they went right to pitocin.

  • I was closed for my first, very unfavorable, and given ctyotec. For this one, only 1-2 cm and still given cytotec. If I had been further along, I would have gotten pit. I'm glad I wasn't because cytotec is enough to jump start labor for me.
  • I had cervadil with my first. I don't even remember feeling it. Then we moved to some blue gel stuff. I never progressed past a fingertips dilation. My cervix didn't want to cooperate.

  • I had my babe a week ago.

I went to be induced but was already 4cm and not thinned out at all. They only used Pitocin. We got things rolling around 9pm and baby was born at 6:42am. It seems long now but went perfect.

  • If you're already 3-4 cm and effaced, you probably don't need any Cytotec or Cervidil and they can go straight to Pit.

I was 2-3 cm and 50% effaced when I was induced with my first and we just did Pit.

This is what I'm hoping for. When I went in for my induction with DD, the nurses checked me, and then called my OB with the info and got her recommendation. Everything I've read says that cervical ripeners are typically used to get the cervix to 1-2cm.

  • I have been induced twice; the first time at 0%, 0cm and the second time I was maybe 3-4 cm. no difference in which drug was used. The difference however was in how often. First induction they gave it to me the night before and I think twice more through the night. The second time they only did it once in the middle of the night.

I thought cytotec wasn't safe. Even the company has come out and said it is not to be used to induce labor. I would do some research on it first.

Cytotec is a safe and effective induction agent. There are numerous medical studies showing this.

  • I was induced the first time with cervadil. When I came in to be induced I was 1cm. It made me have cramps like no other but they weren't contractions so that didn't really help. Things didn't really start moving till she broke my water at 3cm.
