Chicago moms - I need your help!

I know that there's a local Chicago board, but it seems really slow and the most recent similar question got very few responses. I figured that Chicago is large enough that at least some moms may be hanging out on this board.

We are moving to Chicago in about two weeks and I am looking for an OB in the South Loop area. Do you have any good recommendations?

Also, from what I understand, some states require a referral from a GP to see an OB and I'm not sure if Illinois is one of those states. Is it so?

Thank you in advance!

I can't help you with the OB referral (I'm out in the suburbs), but from working in an MD office myself usually referral requirements are insurance-based. I know if you have an HMO insurance you'll need a referral, but for a PPO you can pick pretty much anyone in their network. I've never heard of any state-wide referral requirements.

ETA: if you don't mind traveling about 45mins-hour I love my OB/GYN in Downers Grove, but again, it would involve quite a bit of travel :)

  • I am also out in the suburbs, schaumburg area, and love mine also. But unfortunately I don't know of one in the city. Good luck on your search!
  • No referral was required for me but I was on a PPO.  I use an OB just off of Michigan Avenue and I have a friend who just moved to the city and she is an OB.  Only reason I won't go to her is she is my friend.

  • I love mine (also out in Downers Grove), and my MFM doctor also....but in general you shouldn't need a referal.
  • Even on HMO no referral needed. You just to be sure your family doc is in the same network. I live near the South Loop but am delivering at Swedish Covenant Hospital because of their highly recommended Midwife practice. Its attached to an OB practice. I love it there so far.

Rush and UIC hospitals are right near the South Loop where 90/94 and 290 meet. Called the Illinois Medical District. I'm sure they have several OBs there. I know UIC has a midwife practice too.
  • I am currently seeing a midwife at UIC and I really like her, but I'm switching to my husband's insurance and trying to find an OB that delivers at Prentice and takes an HMO (anyone have suggestions?) I've heard the facilities at Prentice are awesome and if anything goes wrong they have some of the best care in the city (I think they have the most neonatologists compared to other hospitals in Chicago), but I've also heard the rooms at Rush are in the new building and are also really nice. That's closer to south loop like PP mentioned. My husband went to med school at Rush and said the OB residents were really awful people - he didn't want me to have to deal with them, but that cohort might be gone by now.
