Reassure me my pump volumes will go up when I'm away from the babies.
I'm struggling to find time to pump (babies are EBF and I'm trying to get some milk in the freezer). As a result I've almost always BF one or both sides w/in 1/2 hour of pumping and get only 2-3 oz.
Once I'm at work and away for hours, I'll get a lot more right???
I've been assuming I'll get twice the volume I got for my singleton per session- anyone with experience pumping at work for a singleton and twins?
(I'm not having supply issues, my problem is finding time to pump when no one's hungry.)
Thanks!
Re: Pump volume at work
When I returned to work at 3.5mo, I pumped 3x a day - around 11am, 2pm and 430pm. I used an app (Milk Maid) to log all of my output. In the beginning, I averages 20-24oz per day. The babies were eating 4oz bottles 3x a day while I was at work. So 24oz per day.
I'll be honest. It was hard to pump that much and I relied on an extra AM pump session before work and after they ate first thing in the morning to make the 24oz.
Around 6mo, I needed to take more milk plus to maintain output. It did help. I also had amassed a stash of about 500 oz at that point, so I calculated what output + deficit I could carry to get me to a year.
I dropped down to 2 pumps at work at around 9-10mo, when they dropped a bottle. Around 11.5mo, I pumped once per day and then just stopped pumping at work around 12.5 mo. I have an emergency stash of about 25 oz in the freezer after systematically exhausting my stash the last 6 months.
That's way more than you asked for. Sorry. I admit I'm overly anal about this stuff.
With my singleton I really overdid the pumping (had way more in the freezer than I needed). This time, I'm more resentful of the time, and I want to be more laid back about it, but I want to make sure I haven't underestimated. (I'm also hoping I can pump only at work, but it may be unrealistic.)
I think if you logged for a couple weeks once you go back to work, you'd get a good idea of what your production needs are.
I'll also say that as the babies got older and started eating more food, I could have gotten away w shorting bottles on days I didn't produce as much but since I had a stash, I used it. They also never really took more than 4-4.5 oz per bottle either.
