Juice/water

What's your opinion?
I have a 6 month old. We just went for our well check up today and the pedi said it okay to give a little bit of diluted juice or water here and there if I WANTED to. I won't do it often. But silly me forgot to ask specifics on how much is appropriate for a 6 month old.

When did y'all start juice or water and how much did you give to your LO?

  • I didn't give any until after they were 1.

  • My pedi is anti juice but when we gave it to DD1 it was always 50/50 and not until she was over 1 yr. If DD2 gets juice it will be the same she won't even take water now though the little milk snob!

  • Other than the tiny bit of diluted juice Rosie got for constipation she didn't get juice until well past 2. Even now we don't keep it in the house and she gets it maybe 3-4 times a year. Cade has never had juice.

  • I started giving him a sippy of water around 10m so he could learn to use it. Now he gets about 4-6oz. WCM in a cup 2x/day, water in between, and 2 5-6oz bottles of formula, plus meals. He's 12m now. Still not planning on giving him juice anytime soon.

  • We don't do juice unless it's a special occasion (birthday party) or for constipation.  He doesn't seem to really like it.

Also, I think @scoutnumbers05 might have a PSA on this topic.

  • I don't think O has ever had juice at home, though she gets it at grandma's and at dc (in the 19 months + room). Baby has had water (he loves it) but no juice yet at 9 months. No need for it unless you're treating constipation at this age IMO.

  • We started a couple ounces of water in a sippy for practice around 6 or 7 months. He didn't get juice until he was over a year old, and only when he's sick and at risk for dehydration. Now at 3.5, he can have juice at school or parties, but we don't give it to him regularly.

  • Wow.  That came out very snotty.  Oops.

  • Also camp "no juice unless needed and then only no sugar added/organic diluted like whoa" as well as camp "we've tried water in a sippy cup just for practice, but that's it." DD is 8 months.

  • My kid poops the big adult poops.  I can't imagine adding a poop stimulant.  I couldn't afford the plumbing bills.

Also, my child cracks out on sugar.  This is really my main motivation...what will keep my child from spinning wildly out of control?
  • I think we waited until DS was 18 months, although I didn't really have any objections after he turned 1.  He's 4 1/2 not and we still cut it with water.  I was worried about upsetting his tummy.

  • Before one I only gave it once in a blue for constipation. Now I try to keep it as a treat, because he really really enjoys apple juice boxes. I have to keep an eye on dh because he will let him suck it down all day

  • I have a four year old.  He gets juice on road trips and at restaurants occasionally.  I really just don't see the need for it as a daily drink unless there are poop issues.

Every time we visit my mom, she insists on buying juice.  Every stinking time.  I try to explain that he is fine with water and milk.  Why create a taste for sweet drinks?

My MIL is like this too even with t
DD1 and it drives me crazy. But this is also the woman who freaks out about storms and unplugs everything in the house so logic/reasoning is not her strong suit.

  • My pedi said I could give DS 2 oz per day of very diluted juice at that age. I didn't start til he was about 10 months tho.
  • Reese gets it now--but before January it was a grandma's treat 50% juice/50% water--and it was only one cup while she was there.

But now? Anything liquid is gold in our eyes. Truthfully she doesn't really like it that much--she will drink orange juice and lemonade.

My daughter is 3 - she only gets milk or water. She has tried the occasional juice box at birthday parties but hates it & prefers water. (I am very happy about that)
This is our exact situation ('cept DS is younger -- 3 in Sept)... I used juice in very small doses if needed for constipation as a baby, and he's had sips here and there if we're at a party or out somewhere but doesnt really like it .... he really does prefer water (with lemon in it -- pretentious kid!), or milk.  I'm glad for that...water is free, healthier and we don't have to fight about it...for now.  One less sugary thing to make him bonkers.

However, I think the general rule I was told is very small amounts of water while practicing with a sippy are OK while they're still an infant (I'd say older than 6 months for sure though), and don't actually give significant amounts of water/juice until after a year.

  • I gave both kids water with solids at 6 months. I also gave them water if it was hot starting at 6 months too and it was no big deal. I gave my older one juice for constipation before a year and now, I let them both have a 70/30 mix of water and juice at breakfast. My older one loves water (with lemon) and plain old soda water so he is definitely not juice addicted. Instead, he is addicted to unsweetened iced tea...he loves it so much, I make decaf so he can drink it when we play in the backyard on weekends.

  • I don't remember when, but it was older than 6 months. I know DS2 started earlier since he wanted what his older siblings were having. My kids like using the juicer in the morning. DS2 loves making grapefruit juice for breakfast.

  • DD just drinks juice when constipated, which is not very often. She also had some at a recent bday party, but she doesn't drink it regularly. She drinks water and wcm during the day.

DD did drink some water before 1. A few ounces here and there in a sippy during the day when she's was older.

I didn't do juice until after a year, and now it's mostly water. If he asks for "juice," I'll do about 1 part juice to 4 parts water.
  • I think I'll stay away from juice unless it's needed (constipation). Thanks everyone!
