2nd Trimester

Anyone ever had a bladder infection?

Hi ladies. Off and on for about a month now I have been having problems when I urinate. I have been tested for a UTI and a yeast infection by my doctor via urine sample and a swab. Both tests came back showing no sign of anything. I contiune to have at least once a week very frequent urge to urinate ( I know thats common right now but I can notice a difference in this urgency if that makes sense) vaginal dryness, burning when I urinate ( and burning even when I am not), itching and sometimes its hard to begin going to the bathroom. I know I drink plenty of fluids. I felt like this was just something I was going to have to deal with until my son is born. After finding nothing in the tests by OB pretty much blew my complaints off. Last night at my chidbirth prep class the instructor talked about women going into early labor due to infections. The most common of those being a bladder infection and how they can be easily overlooked. With another wave of these symptoms hitting me today (the burning is worse than it has ever been!!) I am wondering if this might be my problem. My husband tells me to call my OB tomorrow but they have blown this off twice already so I see no reason in talking to them. Has anyone else had this problem or a known bladder infection?

  • Thank you. At this point I don't know what to do. I am thinking of asking them to repeat the tests again to see because something definitely is going on. This sharp burning feeling cant be normal!

  • I second the Ph balance being off as a possibility. Also do you drink caffeine? Caffeine is a big bladder irritant (along with most citric fruits). I work in a urology office and a lot of people find relief with diet modifications. However you know your body more than anyone else. If issues still persist I would go back to the doctor.

  • You could have interstitial cystitis. It's not an infection but the symptoms can be very similar. Diet modifications like avoiding spicy or acidic foods can help. There are a couple of medications but I don't think they're safe during pregnancy. I would go see an urologist. They are much more knowledgable about IC than a PCP or OB. Good luck!

  • I have had several bladder infections and a kidney infection, and they all started out as UTIs. Throughout 2nd tri, the urgency I've had reminds me of a UTI, but I don't experience the pain of a bladder infection. My doctor cleared me, so I think it's just an unfortunate symptom of pregnancy. If you're experiencing burning, I would definitely go back to the doctor or seek a second opinion from a urologist. It may not be an infection, but it could be something that is easily remedied.

Everyone's given good advice but I just wanted to add that I have a UTI right now.... and apparently have had one for a while with no symptoms because my dr took several days to call me after a urine test and just after she called me the symptoms hit. I had a constant need to pee but either didn't seem to have any or it was very painful to. And there was abdominal pain, especially if I had been standing a while or done something strenuous. I've had this abdominal pain for a while but my DR thought it was just my ligaments stretching. But now that I'm on antibiotis the pain has gone away.

I had a uti when I first got pregnant but, now am 16 weeks in no more signs of a uti so for.
  • Lab test results are usually more accurate at detecting infections then in office urine test. That being said I would trust my gut that something is wrong, at least on the burning end. However, I wouldn't go around looking to be placed on antibiotics if it weren't completely necessary. They too can affect a fetus. Try straight cranberry juice or pills. It actually does work and in less time than being on antibitotics.
