Gas mileage on Jeep?

We just got a jeep grand Cherokee ('04 77k miles if that makes a difference). Well, I know in town driving is shit, but we're getting less than 9 miles to a gallon. Is that crazy for a small SUV? Or is that more so to be expected. I knew we were getting shit mileage, but I didn't think it was THAT bad. We tried putting mid grade gas in to see if that makes a difference this time :/

Re: Gas mileage on Jeep?

  • My H has a Jeep gc. He says if you have the v8 engine that is pretty normal. If you have the v6 you should take it in to see if there is a fuel leak.

My dad has a slightly newer model than that ('07 I think). He gets about 17mi around town and 22mi highway.

We have a huge-ass Ford Expedition and even we get more than 9mi/gallon.

Sounds like something is wrong with your vehicle. :(
This is us too. 9 mpg is pretty bad.

There are a few things that you can do to see if you can improve your mileage like clean all the air and fuel filters, check the tire pressure. Good luck with that.

Ya we test drove an expedition and it seemed like we got way better gas mileage than the jeep, which is weird since the expedition is so much bigger :(

I'll have to check in a bit. I have no idea if it's a v8 or v6. Hopefully if there is something wrong it's a cheap fix!

He also said that the older models do tend to have worse gas mileage in general.  Sucks - hope you figure it out soon!

  • I have a Jeep Liberty and we get about 21 mpg in the city.
We were looking at a Jeep Liberty too. The back was a little too small for what we were looking for though. What year is yours?

  • @JeffandLeslie Is the v8 or v6 have to do with the cylinders? It says that it has 6 cyclinders, but doesn't say anything about it being a v6 so I assume it's a v6? I don't know too much about cars though so I might be off base.

Sigh, this sucks. I called my mechanic and he's gonna look at it next week. Hopefully it's a cheap fix and we start getting better gas mileage.

It's an 06. The back fits two car seats, not side by side. The trunk fits the Joovy caboose and that's about it. ;)
Still though, that gas mileage is sexy, even with that small of a badonkadonk.

Da fuq is up with an expedition getting better gas mileage than a smaller SUV?!? :((

Ok well this gives me some hope at least. Hopefully the mechanic can figure something out with it. My friend also recommended to add some fuel cleaner the next time we fill up. And we are switching the grade of gas we get.

Any other suggestions for making my gas go longer? I'd hate to have to get rid of it, and DH keeps threatening that if we keep getting gas mileage like this then we will have to. *sob*
