NWMR: Birthday party gift bags

DS's birthday party (he turns 5) is Saturday, and this is the first party we've invited children of non-family members.  So, I thought I'd put together small gift bags for each of the kids.  I'm trying to decide if I give something to DH's cousin's son, who is 10 months old.  That would require getting completely different things than I got for the rest of the kids (who are over 2 years old).  I just don't know what kinds of inexpensive things I could find for an infant.  Thoughts?  Opinions?  Thanks!!

Re: NWMR: Birthday party gift bags

  • You could do a small stuffed animal.

For LO's birthday next month we have a bunch of different aged kids coming so I am doing an "adopt" a pet. His theme is nautical and I am going to do small stuffed animal whales. They are cheap in bulk and since the kids ages span up to 10 and that 10 year old still likes stuffed animals, I figured it's a good party gift.

I don't think it's necessary for a 10 month old, but if you wanted to give something because all of the other kids will get a gift - how about bubbles or something edible, like a container of puffs or small box of cheerios?

  • No gift bag for a 10 month old.  Especially not a specially chosen baby gift bag.

  • I think it is a nice gesture.  I like the idea of puff or something like that.

I think it's a nice gesture, but not necessary if it's stressing you out. At 10 months old, maybe something like teething biscuits or teething toy.

On a side note- I really wish birthday party goody bags weren't a thing. I'd be fine with not getting them at all.

  • @pips09 I wish goody bags weren't a thing as well! In my group, I've gone to three birthday parties- we all just started having kids, 2 of the parties had goody bags and LO was too little so we ended up tossing everything, and the 3rd party didn't do goody bags and I didn't even notice.

Someone gave my son a bag that had a really soft ball in it when he was a baby. We still have it.
  • I threw a small cousin birthday party for DD last month. The kids ranged from 4 months to 6 years. I gave a bag to all but the 4 month old. The bag had lollipops and playdoh. One cousin is 10 months old, and he had no clue, but DS had fun putting together the bags, so whatever. Don't stress over it, either way.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • I would just make identical gift bags and let the parent's decide whether it is age appropriate for their child.  I've received items that I've either held on to until DD got old enough to play with them or I just tossed them.

I know some parents HATE them, but seriously, little things in life make kids happy.

bubbles, chalk, necklaces, little purses, badges, tattoos....

Every child loves bubbles. For babies, parents can blow the bubbles and entertain them.

One great idea we received was those little travel packs of coloring books/crayons that sell for $1.  I love that I can stash this in my bag for emergency purposes. :)

A kid-size colorful ball is fun to play with and no big deal to (oops) lose.

One friend gave buckets stuffed with loads of items and I had commented to her how much I loved the theme bucket - we repurposed it to hold chalk.  So the next year she said she decided (based on my comment) to stick with the bucket idea.  Awesome - now we have another one for crayons!  Now she put in WAY more items than I've done at DD's first two parties which is super generous.  But the overall effect was cute for kids - they must feel like they hit the jackpot!
