Holy Weight Gain, Batman!

So, yesterday was my anatomy scan and it went great. Babies are healthy, so I'm so thankful for that.

When I got on the scale, however, I found I'm up 8 pounds from my 17 week visit (I'm 20 weeks now). Eight pounds in three weeks...for a grand total of 26 pounds at 20 weeks. It's weird, because I swear I don't eat that much (I do drink a lot of water though -- 80-100 oz a day usually).

The doctor had no concerns, but can anyone make me feel a little bit better about this? Is this "normal" in a twin pregnancy? I feel like Dr. Luke would be so proud, but I guess it's my pre-pregnancy fear of gaining too much weight rearing its ugly head.

  • @AnotherDreamer - That's pretty much where I'm at. I eat when I'm hungry and am focusing on getting my protein intake up.

That's exactly when I had my scary weight gain. I gained 12 pounds between 16 and 20 weeks. I was shocked! And a little embarrassed. The doc had zero concern and told me not to worry about it. Totally normal.

It all evened out in the end! I ended up gaining right around the same as I did with my singleton. Just take care of yourself and try not to stress about weight.

  • I think you're doing great! I've gained a little over 20 lbs at 27 weeks and my doc is starting to give me a hard time about needing to gain more weight. So I would say that you are right on track. :)

  • I had a big weight increase around 20-24 weeks nobody was concerned about it. I'll be 27 weeks tomorrow and I'm up 37 pounds. My body has a mind of its own these days so I'm just going with it. As long as the docs aren't concerned and my blood pressure and everything looks good than it's fine. Frustrating, but fine. LOL. I gained more than the recommended amount with my two singletons as well.
  • Dr. Luke would be very proud! I'm hoping to see a spike like that very soon, I feel like I'm having a hard time gaining quickly enough. You're doing great!
  • We were just talking about this earlier this week! Way to go, mama!!!!! I think it's awesome!!!!! Believe me, in a few short months it will be much harder to gain (and eat) so fill 'ER up now! Woo-hoo!

  • Very normal. If it makes you feel better, I had an 11lb jump in two weeks (don't ask me how that happened, I have no clue) around 20-22wks. My weight gain fluctuated a lot and I ended up gaining exactly what was prescribed when all was said and done.

  • Oh girl, you're doing great! There was a study floating around recently that said women who gained more weight during the second trimester were less likely to go into preterm labor! So keep doing what you're doing! I gained 75 and it came off quickly, and my girls were nice weights at birth.

  • Also I'm laughing at 8 lbs in three weeks because I gained 9 in ONE week! haha!

  • You are doing great . . .Dr. Luke would be proud!! I was between 20 - 24 lbs at 20 weeks. It helps b/c I've noticed a serious slow down in my hunger & how much food I can eat in one sitting (now at 22 w).

  • I needed this! I gained 8 lbs in 4 weeks, according to my doc yesterday. I also gained a chunk between my last two appointments. This brings my total gain to about 18 lbs.

Is nice to know that this isn't unheard of :)

Sweetie- I saw photos of you in the beginning (I think you posted a bridesmaid's dress you had to wear) and you are a skinny mini!! Since you started out thin, you are probably just getting some extra that the babies want.

I'm fat to begin with and am a bit horrified that I'm now gaining 1lb a week or so when I hadn't gained the entire first tri... The scale seems to have gone up 3 lbs since Thurs now which is odd since I still throw up daily. No rhyme or reason sometimes!!

I know for me there just wasn't room, I had horrible heartburn and just wasn't hungry to begin with. The last month or two of my pregnancy I gained maybe 1-2lbs. There was a lot of uterus and babies in there, all my organs were beyond squished!
Yep. You literally run out of room for everything. Eating became painful and difficult. The heartburn was so bad even water caused it. Obviously babies keep gaining and growing but I pretty much stalled out the last 4-6 weeks. I was so glad to have put on the weight during the 1st and 2nd tri. Read dr. Luke's book for more info regarding this!

Lol thank you! Yes I was pretty thin when I started. I didn't think I was, but now I look back at my weekly progress photos and I'm like "Daaaamn!" And the realize I think it will be physically impossible for me to ever look like that again --- even losing the weight after twins. Oh well. They are worth it!

  • I've gained about 30 lbs and I'm 25 1/2 weeks.  My OB never brings up weight, and I asked worried.  She said weight gain, like others' said, is important in 2nd trimester.  You're doing great!

  • I'm in the same boat as everyone else - gained 8 lbs in two weeks, etc. I've gained 40 lbs and I'm almost 27 weeks. I'm hoping the weight slows down a bit now and I know I will have to work hard after the twins are born - but as long as they are healthy, it's worth it. I'm trying to eat like I did before I was pregnant (fairly healthy.) The first trimester was hard, but now I feel I'm back on track. Thanks for the support, ladies! I feel like most weight posts are about not gaining enough :(

  • I'm right there with you! I'm 26 weeks and up 6 lbs since my 24 week visit a total of 30 lbs. Seems like a lot to me and I swear I don't eat that much. Some nights I just have a small salad. But the Drs are not concerned.
  • I was so sick I lost 10 lbs the 1st tri, then quickly gained 40 lbs over the next 4 months while trying to gain weight per Dr Luke's suggestions.  A week after delivery, I weighed 5 lbs LESS than before I got pregnant.  It's a lot on your body, and much more water weight than you think as well.

PS - I delivered at 34 weeks - my babes were 4-12 and 6-4, excellent weights for their gestation and being twins.  I credit my weight gain for it!
