Finger foods

Layla will be 9 months on the 24th and the past couple of days she has been really trying to take the spoon from me when I feed her and is getting frustrated. She's getting oatmeal and half of a container of puréed fruit in the morning, the other half of the puréed fruit at lunch, and half a meat vegetable container for dinner. Maybe time to switch to finger foods?? Any advice??

Re: Finger foods

  • Just do it. I started giving him shredded chicken at first, and he took right to it. After that I never went back to purées. I make him 3 meals a week and rotate them all for dinner. I usuall have some left to freeze, too. She'll probably be just fine. Start with small slippery things like avocado, berries, shredded chicken, beans, etc to gauge how she will do

  • My "Mr. Independent" child decided he didn't want to be spoon fed once he hit 9 months. We are doing nitrate free deli meats, cheeses, steamed veggies and fruits cut into little "pick-up" sizes. Other then those, we will just cut up whatever meat, veggie and starch we have for dinner and he loves it.
  • We still do purees but we increased how much we give. 2 containers everytime he eats. Plus he loves puffs and we give him some of the items from our plate. He likes bread, sweet potato and mac and cheese the best.
  • Dd spits out anything I put in her mouth. Now she's gets pieces of food on her tray so she can feed herself. I just wish she'd hold her own bottle. [-O<

We have been doing BLW with purees from day 1 - DS is super independent and loves to be able to feed himself. Steamed carrots are a great first starter, along with steamed sweet potatoes (cut into stick shapes). Grapes cut in half, pieces of ripe melon and pear, shredded chicken, etc. He pretty much eats whatever at this point!

Same here.  BLW with purees since 4 months.  Never a problem and DS is almost getting to the point of spoon feeding himself the purees.  Its still a little too messy for me to not hold the container but he can do spoon to mouth by himself.

This. He looks at me like I'm crazy when I try to spoon feed any purees.
