Any gassy babies at night out there?

My baby tends to get bad gas at night only followed by a poopy diaper. He screams at the top of his lungs while dealing with the pain of the gas. We have tried cycling his legs and helping out and we also started gas drops.
Is there anyone else in the same boat?
What are you doing that is working to fix this?

Sorry on mobile and I did search but if wouldn't allow me to click any if them

  • DD1 got really bad gas one night while we were visiting grandparents. All the stores were closed, so we couldn't just run out and buy gas drops. Grandma warmed a small hand towel in the dryer, folded it up and applied it to her belly. DD stopped screaming after a few minutes and was able to pass gas. It worked for us!!

  • Ds1 was very gassy. We used gas drops in all of his bottles and we also used gripe water for hiccups and gas! Gripe water was a great cure all for us! We used the Mommy's Bliss brand ( mother's bliss- I don't remember the exact brand name) it's all natural and worked wonders for us and I even told my neighbor when she had her LO 4 mos after DS1.
  • Exactly as PP have said. Gas drops and the Gripe water work wonders. Plus that hot towel thing, my grandma used to do the same thing.

    We have our "Irish Twins"

  • I don't know if you are BF or FF, but making changes there might help. When I was BFing, if I ate any red sauce, it would destroy LOs belly. Now that we are all formula, I googled and found that our formula (enfamil Enfacare) is notorious for painful gas. Unfortunate we cannot change until the dr gives us the green light, but I've read people have success sometimes changing brands or types.

In the meantime, we are diligent with the gas drops. And I try to hold him while it passes because I can tell that shit hurts. I'm not sure if that helps him or just me.

  • We are doing gas drops before we head to bed and it seems to help. Also, anything warm on the belly will help relax the muscles and allow LO to poop if the gas is being caused while he tries to poop. DD hadn't pooped in several days and her umbilical nub finally fell off so I gave her a bath and within the hour she pooped just from being relaxed. Good luck!

  • I am totally in the same boat! Doing the Mylicon gas drops and cycling legs, and of course, cuddling baby. I also put my hands under her feet while I hold her so when she is squirmy I can apply counter pressure to her feet/legs. Pedi recommended this and I believe it helps. I'm def going to try the towel trick next. I just wish I could take all her (and all of our babies) tummy pains away!

  • I watched a video on baby belly massaging. I massage his belly, and for the first minute he is still screaming but literally right after he starts tooting and calms down. When I start his belly is hard and when I finish it is soft. He ends with a poopy diaper most times but sometimes it is all gas!

I didn't try gas drops because I'm kind of nervous about giving him any medication. I just went straight with the massage, and sometimes I sit on my yoga ball and bounce lightly and that helps too.

  • I used the I Love You massage technique with ds and have looked in to using it again with DD this time. Google it and check out the youtube videos on how to do it. It helps press gas bubbles out and was very relieving. Worked way better than gripe water or other gas drops did for us. The cycling movements, longer burping sessions and slower eating sessions help too.
  • My DS was gassy almost every evening. I was giving gas drops and gripe water although I'm not sure they did much to help. We saw the pedi yesterday and he told me that he would stay away from any over the counter stuff (which I was surprised to hear.) He told me to place a warm towel on his belly, massage his tummy and back, and cycle his legs.

  • We've tried everything and nothing is working...it's only when we lay him down to sleep ....no sleep for DH and I for the last 2 weeks...DH goes back to work and I want his tome to be memorible but this is getting ridiculous
  • Another tip for the FTMs....if your noticing fussiness/ gassiness when laying LO down try getting a crib wedge. It goes under the mattress pad and sheet and just gives LO enough of an upright angle to help. They do it a lot with reflux babies and we also noticed it helped when DS had a stuffy nose. Good luck
  • I'm wondering if DD is eating too much & it's making her stomach hurt. @abundancenow How are you slowing down the eating sessions? That also may be DD's issue. She's slept great the first week & a half home. The past two nights she's been up, fussy, pooty & the likes.

I'm supplementing with formula in addition to breast feeding. When feeding with a bottle, I try to take longer burp breaks or distract her by walking around before resuming feeding. For example, I try to take 3 breaks for a 2 oz bottle. This can be a struggle bc she would gulp down an entire bottle if I let her.
When breastfeeding, I still take burp breaks, but about after 10 minutes. She seems to get more gas pains from formula than breastfeeding. I think the flow is much slower from the breast compared to bottle.
