NPBR: Daughters vs Sons Cost study

https://money.msn.com/saving-money-tips/post--daughters-are-a-bargain-not-necessarily-say-parents

This article just blew my mind and pissed me off.  I knew so many boys who cost just as much or more than what they say girls are, that the entire article screamed blantant gender sexism.  Thoughts anyone?  Agree, disagree?

Wanted to get some interesting takes on this

Re: NPBR: Daughters vs Sons Cost study

  • Not sure I agree at all, but I only have a son, so there's nothing for me to compare it, too. However, our DS plays 3 sports and needs new gear every time because he grows like a weed. Sports fees are also not cheap. We need to replace clothes and shoes multiple times during a school year because he grows, as kids tend to do.

I think any gender of a child can be raised on whatever money a parent allows. Plus, this article is assuming that boys do "boy sports" and girls do "girl sports" and this just isn't reality.

Yeah I found the article sexist and stupid. A dad complaining about buying designer clothes and make up for his daughter? Here's a suggestion...don't. I bought all my own crap even though my parents probably could have--they made me get a job and buy my own frivolous things, which is what my kids (boys or girls) will be doing.
exactly, I got a job at 15 and was buying most of my own clothes from there on out and they weren't designer

  • Every situation is different I have a competitive gymnast, what does that mean you ask??
$450 a month year round increasing every year
    $300 for competition Leo
    $150 for her warm up
    $300 for camp
    $525 coaches fees
Average $250 a month during competition season for meet fees (October - February )
    Bla bla bla bla bla

    My son plays football
    $150 registration
    $100 equipment
    $2 for a hotdog
    Done!

Get the point lol, it all depends on your child!
  • Exactly @hoping4aUNICORN‌, and you could just as easily have a boy that's a gymnast. It really does depend on the kid--saying cost depends on a child's sex is misguided.

Well, my sister and I owned and competed with horses growing up (now work in that field), so we clearly had very expensive hobbies/sports! When people would ask if I thought I was having a boy or girl, I would joke I was in trouble if it is a future pony rider in there because we'd both need two or three jobs.

It just seemed like an article interviewing a whiny parent. It all depends on how you are raised. If I wanted something from a store other than kohls or target or something on sale, I had to buy it myself. My mother would never pay more than about $15 for a shirt for me or $20 for pants. I bargained with my mom for my prom dress because I had my heart set on a $250 one and we ended up agreeing to split the cost because she refused to go over $150. Yes you spend money on a child, but you don't HAVE to buy designer stuff and you don't have to do it all yourself.

And my best friend (male) wears more expensive clothes than I do even today. Another male friend is a competitive dancer in multiple styles. I know girls who played football in school. Your sex and your gender have no bearing on how much you will cost to raise.

  • I know this is bad that this is the biggest thing I'm taking away from this article, but who went to a dermatologist once they hit puberty? I've never heard of going that young before unless there is a severe acne situation. I didn't go to a dermatologist until I was 25, and that was only because my gyno saw a mole she thought I should get checked out.

And designer clothes? What ever happened to just going to American Eagle and being done with it?

I don't have any previous children, but I have to agree with the parts of the article about girls growing up so much faster now than ever before. I teach 8th grade and they are all little ladies. They go to the concerts, play sports, are involved in dance, and some of them even take professional acting or singing lessons. I also wanted to point out that the whole sweet sixteen thing these days is just insane! Its like a wedding! In fact, when we were looking at wedding venues three years ago, some teenager was having her sweet sixteen at the wedding hall!! I took my friends to dinner and watched a movie when I turned 16...just saying!

    BFP#2:   2/7/14 ~ m/c 2/20/14 ~ possibly due to chemical pregnancy ~ TG no D&C is needed

Surprise BFP#3:  4/4/14 ~ super duper extra happy (and nervous) about this one - EDD 12/9/14!!!
