I am horrified ( trigger warning)

DH and I lived in a condo community until we bought our house last year. We decided to keep the condo and rent it out as an investment property. We've had a tenant since last August, and he's been great about paying rent, kept the condo nice, etc. In June, he indicated he would be signing another year lease, but then suddenly he called my husband and said he would be moving back to Brazil with his sister instead. That was weird, but I didn't think too much of it.

Today I checked the mail and I got a letter from the condo community asking me to call them and an attached newspaper article. The article is about our tenant being arrested for possession and distribution of child pornography. He's due back in court August 8th.

I feel like I'm going to be sick. We obviously didn't know, but I still feel guilty that we let a pedophile into that community. DH called the cops and let them know that he was planning on going to Brazil, but the cops didn't really seem to care (he has citizenship there). I'm waiting for the condo to call me back.

I am so sad and I really, really hope that no harm has come to any of the kids at the condo. He's already mostly moved out according to DH who happened to be there yesterday for a showing.

    Wow, that's terrifying! Perhaps the the cops aren't too worried because he's in custody or being monitored?

    They said they don't care because he's "allowed" to go back to Brazil. That seems so wrong to me. So he can go victimize children in Brazil and that's ok?

    What the everloving frack?!?! I don't understand how that is ok in any way, shape, or form!!

    If he's not an American citizen maybe they feel like it's not worth prosecuting him because he can go back to Brazil anytime and Brazil won't extradite him. Still sucks though.

    Oh my gosh, I am so sorry. This is in NO way your fault. Please do not feel guilty about this, there was no way you could have known. 

    I am so glad he was caught and is going to face consequences, though. At least it isn't going to go on any longer.

    Ugh. That sucks. I mean he won't be able to come back here legally but he shouldn't be free in Brazil with no trial either.

    I'm so sorry. :(  Like the others said, you have no part in any of what happened. I hate that he can get away with it by leaving the country. That's awful.

    Im so sorry... This is very horrible! You have absolutely no fault or blame in this at all! I would suggest maybe calling the DA's office though, instead of the cops. The DA who is prosecuting the case may like to have that info...and the local cops (usually) just move onto the next case once they've completed their investigation.
