Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How do I get my baby to STTN?

I'm not complaining, but it would be nice to have my ds sttn.  Am I doing something wrong?  He is still sleeping in his bassinet next to our bed and he falls asleep around 11 and wakes at 2:30 and 6:00 to be bf.  I've been back to work since he was 8 weeks so I wake him around 6:45 for daycare.  Is he really hungry when he wakes throughout the night?  It doesn't seem he can go through the whole night without being fed.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  TIA

  • Let me know what you find out. DD still wakes up at least 3 times a night.  I am still waiting to make an AW post about her STTN.... even if it was just a fluke.

  • That's a great question.  I have no idea since my guy is doing the same thing.  It is going to be hard to go back to work on Monday.

  • Well, its kind of hit or miss with us.  Sometimes he goes from about 10:30p-6a, sometimes he's still up around 3 or 4.  He sleeps the best when he cluster feeds at night, eating every 2 hours.
  • I don't know if it was anything I did or if it was just timing but around 12 weeks, we changed the way we swaddled ds.

we wrapped the swaddleme under and around his right arm to kind of pin it down, so he couldn't wiggle out as easy. (he cries when he breaks out).

we upped his oz's during the day because he seemed hungry after some feedings. so once we went to 5 oz every feeding he sttn.

also i found the right white noise for HIM. for him it was vacuumn noise from

www.babywhitenoise.com once we did those 3 things it was like a switch. he sleeps usually 12 hrs.

    good luck!!!

  • Once we moved DD to her room, she started sleeping longer and better.  I think our snoring was probably bothering her, and we would respond to her every little noise.  Now we respond when she's actually crying, not just making noise in her sleep.  If you are ready for it, I would suggesting moving baby out of your room (assuming baby is in your room)
  • Once he was sleeping in his own room in his crib, the sleeping naturally got longer. That would be my first step for you. Second would be to increase how much he is drinking. Once we were up to 30-32 oz/day, 6 oz at a time. Also good naps. When he doesn't get a nice long nap in the afternoon, he actually sleeps worse at night. Also we put him right down after his last feeding at 8:30 pm.  When he is done, we change his diaper and swaddle him in a Swaddle Me and put him right into his crib. Put the mobile on and a machine that projects on the ceiling and plays music. Then we just leave the room, no nighlight. He then goes to sleep on his own within 10 mn, no crying. He soothes himself which I think is very important to sound sleeping all night because if he does wake up at night he usually puts himself back to sleep (and I am not talking about CIO).

  • He's young.  You're lucky he is only  waking up twice!  Some nights, my 10.5 month old is up every hour!
  • STTN is a milestone.  just like sitting up, or giggling or whatever.  your baby will do it when they are ready
  • give him a shot of whiskey.....

    seriously, all babies are different........

there isn't anything that you can do to make him sttn.......

fwiw, there's the 4m wakeful period, and when babies are mastering a milestone their sleep is going to regress......oliver sttn since 2m and every time he got a tooth he was up 2-3x/night......we're currently getting over ONE MONTH of 2-3-4x/night because he is getting a tooth and mastering crawling...

  • My baby is 6 weeks and she started STTN 3 days ago :). KNOCK ON WOOD!  I agree that it is kinda when you realize that they are really noise sleepers and that until it is a cry or they are awake don't bother them.  She has slept in our room, but I don't touch her until she is crying or awake.  She has been going down at 930 - 10 and up at 5.
  • He might just not be ready, a lot of babies dont STTN at your DS's age. My DS STTN for 2 months and then hit the 4 month wakeful period, then cut 2 teeth and were back to night wakings. For us, this was the winning combination for STTN:

Moving him from the co-sleeper in our room to his own crib. It took a few bad nights, but then he started sleeping longer stretches in his own room. Breaking him of the swaddle, DS was waking himself up trying to break out. More ounces of formula at bedtime. White noise. A warmer room.

  • He/she will do it when ready, but thing to give a try if you havnt already:

tight swaddle, white noise, bedtime routine, dont pick up until crying (if he/she is just fussing, let them be, or stick pacifier in mouth), test to see if he/she is really waking because of hunger (try to get her back to sleep by rocking/singing/etc first)

  • Get a life. My 6-month-old wakes a LOT more than that.
