Trying to Get Pregnant

Homeowner Woes

So frustrated.

DH and I bought our first home this year. We moved in in April. We really should have listened to my dad, who sells real estate, when he advised us not to buy this house. But, hard headed me convinced DH that buying a "fixer upper" would be so much fun. :::eye roll::: Not so much. Honestly, this house should be condemned. We've decided to do some cheap updates and put it back on the market. I can't handle being there. Not being happy in my own home is the worst. Plus, most of our things are still in storage. Or in boxes in the house. It's awful.

We've found a home for rent that is well below what we were planning to spend on a rental. So I'm at least very excited about that. I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that our POS house isn't on the market for too long. Maybe another naive couple will come along and scoop it up. HA :-w

Re: Homeowner Woes

  • I'm so sorry.  I think the biggest downside to buying a home is the potential issues you will have.  We bought a foreclosure a little over a year ago and still have things that we need to fix.  Luckily they are mostly cosmetic, but our A/C did just crap out on us so that is going to be a ton of money to fix.

  • Sorry that sucks! We bought a house that was ready-to-move-in so we didn't have to fix up and there always seems to be some kind of problem. Our garage door just broke and I got hit by a cord in the process. Our dishwasher is slowly breaking. The previous owners did the cheap thing and we keep coming across problems. It's starting to drive me crazy but I keep telling myself that it's just the joys of home ownership.

But you should definitely be happy in your own home. Good luck! I hope it sells quickly.

  • That is awful :( your home should be your sanctuary. I hope you can sell it soon and the rental works out!

My 1st house was an REO. The bank came in and painted and put in new floors, basically they slapped some lipstick on a pig. Within the 1st year we multiple roof leaks, plumbing leaks, and the worst was our drain pipe that took our water out from our house was clogged with palm tree roots. So we had to rip up the driveway and replace the pipe. And of course rip out the trees so it didnt happen again! Thankfully we had a plumber in the neighborhood that we made friends with.
  • Our work schedules are very demanding, so I'm not sure why we thought fixing up a house while TTC was a good idea. I think I watch too much HGTV, LOL. At least that's what my husband tells me. Worst case scenario is that the house takes forever to sell. The upside is that I can see us really enjoying the rental home. Go figure

  • That sucks! We had an issue like this with our first house. We bought it new and it just came with a huge host of problems. We decided to sell it and luckily found another amazing house very quickly after only renting for 3 months. And we actually made money on the sale! Im keeping my fingers crossed for you that you have a similar situation :(
Im really sorry though. Thats so lame. House buying is supposed to be positive.
    Due March 2016 :)

And shit like this is WHY you get it inspected, even if you are looking at a place as-is. At least then you can know what you are in for.

Exactly. Or you can negotiate with the sellers for repairs, allowances, etc. We have had really no issues with our first home and I am glad we owned it. Just pay very close attention to all of the inspection notes, etc.

All true. We are one hour into home inspection....sigh. Only two things stick out to me as major, but none of them needing updates right now (5-10yrs) so it's good to know. Some minor stuff....so far...shits stressful. Especially coming from apartment renters.

    I'm sorry :(

Four days after I signed and moved into our house, my septic backed up into my basement. Turns out the pipes are made from clay, tree roots grew into them, and plugged them up. DH was deployed, so I got to clean up tp and feces by myself. That's what we get for buying a beautiful old home built in 1900.
  • That sucks!!! :( Hopefully you'll be able to sell it quickly!

  • We saved up money to landscape our yard and get a new walkway for the house we just bought last fall.

instead we spent every dime of it, and some, on new....   gutters and soffets. And replacing the siding that was damaged by the bad gutters.

Because the asshats who owned our house before we did apparently watched too much HGTV and thought they could DIY the whole thing a couple of years ago.  Fail.

All part of the joy of home ownership, but really, in the end its worth it.
