Where did my great sleeper go?

Jack is 3 months old today and for the last week and a half he has had horrible sleeping patterns.  I'm blaming myself right now because this all started when I began side feeding him in bed.  Prior to that he was a dream.  He would go down and sleep for 4-5 hours wake up for a diaper change and feeding then right back down.  Now he is waking up at least once every hour and a half.  Sometimes twice in 1 hour.  Have any of you guys experienced this sudden change in sleep patterns and if so was it a phase or am I totally screwing up his nighttime routine.  I don't want to start the self soothing process just yet, It breaks my heart to hear him so upset.  I'm starting to freak a bit because I am lucky if he goes down for an hour long nap during the day and I know he has to just be exhausted.  Any input would be so appreciated.   The only other issue we are combating currently is a case of itchy cradle cap as well as eczema.  I've been using Aquaphore but he has been breaking out from it, now Im using Aveeno Eczema treatment.  Keeping my fingers crossed.  I make sure to get him all lotioned up before bed so he isn't itchy.  Even putting coconut oil on his head.

Re: Where did my great sleeper go?

  • In my experience, it's a phase. Babies' sleep patterns change as they get older, I've always heard of this particular phase called the Four Month Sleep Regression, but it doesn't have to be spot on four months. My little guy is having trouble with sleep lately, too — but with him, it's trouble falling asleep. Once he's out, his routine is the same.

Sleep stuff can make you nuts, but try to remember that pretty much everything at this age is just a phase, and will only last a few weeks at most if you stay consistent with your routine! Good luck!

We hit the 4 month sleep regression at 13 weeks.  He went from 5-6 hours to sleeping maybe 2 at a time.  LO also has some rough cradle cap patches that are scaly and yucky.  We've been doing aquafor and coconut oil as well, but ped today mentioned we could use 1% hydrocortisone cream twice daily for 4-7 days to help it heal, so I'm going to try that.

ETA you might find more info on the 4 Month Sleep Regression thread posted a few days ago
  • Awesome thanks so much you guys.  I just did a major happy dance because he had a 2 plus hour nap.  Wee hoo!!!
  • My DS also went through something similar right when he turned 3 months. He would only sleep if DH or I were in the same room as him. Now a few weeks later he is back to sleeping 9-4 then 430-930! I blame the change on leap 3.

  • jack and tessa must be hiding out together somewhere because she went wherever he is too.

12:19am here and we've gone back in to rock her to sleep i don't know...  6 or 7 times already?  maybe more?  i've lost count.

daytime naps are c-r-a-p too.  nothing more than 40 minutes, and even those aren't always guaranteed.  i often get little 15-20 min teasers.

it's a phase.  i know it is.  it will end eventually!
  • Same boat here. Baby waking multiple times a night when she used to sleep until 6 am. It is a phase and nothing you are doing wrong.

  • For the cradle cap we have been using an essential oil blend consisting of lavender, geranium, melaleuca, non fractionated coconut oil, and balance... It's worked like a CHARM! A full baby food jar cost me $15 from my local DoTERRA rep, but I'm sure you could find the same oils at your local organic super market... We also diffuse breathe and serenity at night (with water), which smells amazing and calms us all!

  • Same thing for us. He was sleeping 7-10 hours straight and now we're back to waking up 2-3 times a night. He's not going down easily either. I hope it's a phase. DH has had to wake up and put him back down for me twice this week because I am getting so tired and frustrated. I am feeling defeated. The kid wins this time.

Bear must be hiding out with Jack & Tessa too! Although, he was never a great sleeper to start so maybe they can give him some pointers!
It's 245am here & this is the third time I'm up with many more to go!
  • Mine is doing the same. But like others said at this stage everything is just a phase. I don't believe in self soothing or crying it out. I believe if they are crying they need you. I believe you know your baby can self soothe when he/she can put himself back to bed without starting to cry hysterically. If they can't do that they are not mature enough to self soothe. That's my opinion though everyone is different.
