Who says this?

I have a female colleague who I am in the process of introducing all my clients to her so she can manage them while I am away on mat leave. She's a really odd thinker and is very negative. Always always always complaining and it drives me bat shit. Today took the cake of the weird things she says. I was talking to her about my brother, who bats for the other team (if you get my drift) and her question to me was "well, who in your family did he get that from?" Of course, I was confused, so I asked her what she meant by that. And she meant exactly what she said. She truly believes being gay is genetic and that we had to have someone back in our family history with the "gay gene" that got passed along to my brother... I can hardly believe anyone actually believes any of this?!?

Re: Who says this?

  • Wow...even if you think that, that's an awfully bold/rude thing to say.

  • What? She's loony. Lol! Actually that kind of makes me laugh.

  • Wow, that's a really weird and intrusive question.

  • I really don't know what I would have said to her... And then I really started to think if I could think of ANYONE else in my family that is gay and I can't!  There might be some other people who haven't come out, but I'm the first one in my family who's out.

As a side note, the number of bold (and legitimately illogical) things that people have said to me regarding gay people, while not knowing my sexual orientation, is crazy.

  • I would have had to walk away... I have no patience for that shit.

Well at least she agrees that people are born gay vs. making a choice. She's just taken that fact waaaay too literally.

    I would've choked her.

Yeah, this was my thought... I mean, at least she doesn't think it's a choice... But still such a weird thing to say! I mean, by that logic, my 2nd cousin's daughter would have inherited her "gay gene" from... My mom's 1st cousin, who is... Her 1st cousin twice removed, I think? Yeah. Neither genetics nor sexual orientation works that way as far as I know. :-p

  • While I do believe sexual orientation isn't something you choose she definitley went about saying it in a really odd way.

Strange.. What did you say? That is one of those situations I would be so caught of guard I would mubble some incoherent babble then, think of something brilliant later on. Of course i would be kicking myself all day for missing a chance for a good burn ;)

Well, we were eating outside and I actually plunked my plate down, looked right at her and asked her "what do you mean by that?" Then she went on to explain her theory. I told her that I had never heard that theory before and didn't think it would be a widely popular one here in our city (she moved across country from an area of the city that is very gay friendly, so I don't know how she could be so ignorant). She then asked me if my brother got his gay gene from my uncle because my uncle had committed suicide. I told her my uncle was not gay and that it had nothing to do with that whatsoever.
