Air Travel Next Month.. Any tips?

Hi All!!

I have been active on the board, just changed my username recently due to my previous username having personal info in it.

My question today is air travel.... My company just informed me that they want me to travel to some out of state events next month. These trips will require me to fly out of state on 3 different occasions with the longest flight being 4 hours one way. Travel will occur while I'm between 30-33 weeks, so I'm pretty sure my OB will be ok with it.

Can any of you provide safe flying tips while up in the air?

Thanks all!

  • Drink MUCH more than you think you need. And pack a lot of food that is hard to buy at airports- cut fruit and veggies.

I also pack protein rich foods because it is hard to eat at an airport, especially if they only have sandwiches, and eating cold sandwiches is risky.

    Sit in an aisle seat.

Be sure to take it easy! Very important. I had a huge round ligament pain attack after a flight from Ireland to US.

  • My top tips:
    1) Bring snacks!
    2) Bring a small pillow for your back
    3) Drink lots of water and walk around
    4) Pay to check your luggage- do not take any carry-ons besides your purse and the snacks and pillow

I personally don't go through the x-ray machines and opt for the pat down but everyone differs on this...

  • We flew two weeks ago.  Top tip that I got:  bring more water on the plane than you think you will need.  Both ways, I went through  two liters of water on each flight (3 hour flight) plus the water that they gave me at beverage service.  I did use compression socks both ways and didn't have any major issues with swelling.  Bring lots of snacks that you can eat.  Having GD, we ended up raiding our local Target for single servings of peanut butter, crackers, beef jerky, etc.

Be prepared to wait a while if you ask for a pat down.  Flying out of DC was no big deal (DH only had to wait a few minutes for me and the agent was polite about it).  Flying out of Dallas was a massive hassle and I felt that they singled me out as I was pregnant (about 10 other people were allowed to go through the old metal detectors without a pat down while I was waiting but they made me get a full pat down [after waiting 10 minutes] and refused to consider sending me through the metal detectors, despite my questions as to why the difference in treatment).

  • @DreadGamerWife‌ Dallas is one of my destinations, thank you for the heads up!

These are all good tips that I will make sure to use while traveling. :)

  • All I have to add is if you can't get up and walk around just point your toes to the ceiling several times and that should help you with leg circulation. I wasn't moving around enough at one point and I had this really weird rash on the inside of my thigh that looked like honeycomb. It hurt and then it itched. After moving around it went away though.

  • I'm taking a 3.5 hour flight on Monday morning for work.  I asked my MW at my last appointment and her only advice was the make sure to get up and walk around a lot.

    Good luck!

Ugh, that stinks.  I'll be flying into and out of DFW.  Good to know!

I've been flying a ton these past few months and I think these things are just really unpredictable. I've had mostly terrible experiences out of DC (where I live) and I had a super easy time last time I flew through DFW. I'm actually typing this in line at DFW again so fingers crossed it will be as easy as last time!

  • @sngsoprano1‌ I took Dramamine as well on my flights to and from Ireland. I was 10 weeks pregnant and morning sickness wasn't pretty. The Dramamine helped a little. But I was also prepared with Zofran if I needed it.

  • I asked this a few weeks back. Bring your own water jug (empty, fill after security - most food places gave me ice and water no questions) - this was a life saver! I opted out if the scanners, and I did have a long wait at one airport. My addition - when landing during braking hold your belly! I felt like mine was being pulled off... Just wrapped my arms around tightly. It was a weird feeling... Also you qualify for pre-boarding, just ask at the gate or check in.
