XP: Screaming Through Naps

DS (17 months) has always been a rockstar night time sleeper (12 - 12.5 hours straight with no wake ups) and "ehh" when it comes to naps. We did CIO nap training (ferber) and got to a much better place with naps (1 nap per day lasting about 1.5 hours - sometimes longer, sometimes a little less). We recently moved to a new state and he seems to have done fantastic with the transition, in that he seems himself, he loves our new home, etc, but since moving his naps have gone to hell!

He's actually increased the amount of nighttime sleep he gets (he used to be up at 6:45 am on the dot, now he sleeps in till 7:00 or 7:15), but for the past couple of weeks naps have been a terror. I've tried the same time as usual, a little earlier, a little later, and I just seem to get the same result... about 25-35 minutes of standing up in the crib, crying (on and off - but standing the whole time). He has his lovey which he is very attached to, and we've kept the nap time routine the same, so I'm not sure what the deal is. I tried going in yesterday to calm him, but seem to have just prolonged it because as soon as I left he started crying full force again.

He seems to like his crib and actually asks to go in for a nap by waking over and pointing to it, but once I leave its a mess!

Should I start waking him at 6:45 am again? Any tips/things to try?

Thanks in advance!

  • Op it might just be adjusting to the new house or different lighting now that it's summer? I agree that the extra 15 minutes isn't likely the culprit. I would suspect more the move.

  • For starters, I apologize for posting and causing drama - not my intent at all! I have lurked for quite a while and occasionally posted, but generally stay to myself. I was having a moment of "oh my g-d, I ruined my child" there while he was screaming non-stop.

He does have a lovey that is usually a key source of comfort, but it just seems he wasn't going down that day. When I finally went in after 2 hours (yes, that long), he immediately stopped crying, giggled, and said "Mama" while reaching out to me, so I doubt he is traumatized and rather just VERY strong willed. He also carried on for the rest of the day very happy and went down for bed no problem.

Thankfully, he went right down for his nap yesterday. I did go back to getting him at 6:45 am because while I agree it's probably not the issue, I figured at this point, why not? Another board mentioned the 18 month sleep regression as a possible explanation, which is possible, and also just testing boundaries.

Thank you so much for everyone who offered advice, and I am sorry to have caused a little bit of drama!

  • This post made me go back and check the wonder weeks app (remember those?) and yep, we're right there in one. The last one in the app I believe. From weeks 71 through 76 (-ish). DD was born March 6th and is in week 72 if that helps.
  • @PhieryBFly‌ I completely didn't think about something like that.
