Floor foam tile

Dear Bumpies (Bumpetts?) I need your help. I am looking for reasonably priced foam floor tiles. The hard wooden floors are already causing problems as LO gets coordinated. If they are pet wear resistant even better. I have seen some in store and had sticker shock. $70 for a 9 1ftx1ft thin foam was crazy. Yoga mats are cheaper and thicker.

Yoga mats are a great idea!

BRU has 4x4 for $26 and Amazon did have some for $21, I don't know if they still do. Still expensive, but I used gift cards. I covered the den with 3 packs of them. I'll have to get more eventually because the whole house is hardwood or tile.

@RosiePeare‌ I have been stalking CL. The issue is when you don't live near a large population, there isn't much posted on CL. The used baby item market up here is very slim.

@mlynn333‌ Menard's? I looked it up. That store is only on the Eastern side of the continental divide.

@dunvilles‌ I have been contemplating getting a rug. I just have my hopes set on easy to clean surface from dirt, mud, construction dust, baby substance, ect. It is certainly my back up plan. When I go to the main town(2 hr drive 1 way) I have been checking out the target and costco. Nothing has jumped out at me. KWIM? It could be the problem that I'm just not satisfied with anything I find and just need to get something anyways. I was just unsure if any of our shopping savvy ladies found a quality floor solution for our little ones at a great price online or target (free shipping).

We have super hard slate floors so we have these. They weren't cheap but they have held up really well and are free of some toxicants sometimes found in foam mats. https://www.softtiles.com

We have some, which are great for LO to play on, BUT they also attract the dogs, and get filthy dirty quickly. It's a PITA to clean up for every use, because of all the little pieces. I found some at the grocery store that are 24x24 with no cut out pieces, for only $12. I wish I'd bought those!

The family I nanny for use to have the ABC style. Like @MissDemeanor said it is a major PITA to clean. Not only is it a major manget for hair and dirt (especially underneath)...as the boys I watched got older and teeth they use to actually be able to bite pieces out of the letters. I would recommend something without cut outs for sure.

I have a Lightening McQueen one that we got or DS1 three years ago. It was $19.99 and it is still in really good condition. It had a thin border that went around it (maybe 2 inches wide) and that was the only thing that ended up getting destroyed. He pulled the border off every. single. day. multiple times a day and eventually started chewing on it. I threw the border way immediately because I was afraid he would get a chunk off and eat it.

I don't recommend the alphabet mat either because of the cut out letters... I'd imagine it would pose the same hazard. Although, it would be great for when they are a bit older.

Plus, putting back together a huge foam floor puzzle 1,726,828,975 times a day with 100 different pieces gets really old. Really fast.

I had to pull the border off about a month ago! Reece loves to pull it off, and has also mastered the tiles. I'm thinking of an IKEA rug.

My friend gave me a good tip though... Foam tiles for camping, inside the tent. She says it stops the cold air from coming up through the air mattress

So to summarize: Larger peices without the shapes/letters and preferably the edge peices. If the cute factor isn't considered wouldn't that be the 'work out' version of foam tiles? Would those also be more durable, but potentially more toxic because they are not ment for floor licking children.

I knew you ladies would have insights. Thank you.

A rug/carpet in our household would be a nightmare because of all the mud and snow melt. But It could be. solution out of high traffic areas.

All the carpet tiles I have seen had a very rough backing, which would be bad on the finish on the floors. Are there nicer back carpet tiles? I will check them out again for the next round on construction supplies :-w

@RondackHiker‌ I'm aware the outside will get on any floor softener, I was just thinking a wipe able surface would be easier to clean then a carpeted surface. I have been looking at 4 ft square solid foam tiles so it would have minimal crevasses to clean.

@Junebugz1‌ I will check out Flor's. Thank you for giving me a brand to look out for.

@DreamingBabies‌ that's a great idea. The gym mats are easily moved around and cleaned. It can also get recycled into dog beds in many years. I will reach out to the 'local' kids gym to see if they are willing to upgrade theirs anytime soon

I guess I'm just nervous to pull the trigger on buying something. It's a big hasten if it's not right. Thank you everyone for your input

We also have Flor tiles in our entryway and they're great! Our whole downstairs is slate so we tried to cover a lot of it in various ways when DD started walking so she wouldn't fall over and crack her head open. But the softiles are much softer than the flor tiles we have.
