2nd Trimester

Tummy sleepers....

My name is Sarah and I am a tummy sleeper.... with DD I would fantasize every night about cutting a baby-bump sized hole in the 4" memory foam pad we have on our bed so I could resume my favorite sleeping position.  I thought this was crazy until I saw something on The Ellen Show about a guy posting something like this on sale on Craigslist (making fun of how someone would really sell this kind of stuff) and it got me wondering if I should give this a try with this baby.  As you ladies are reaching the point of having a bump, have any of you tried this?  :)

  • I'm a stomach sleeper and I wouldn't try it. I'd still have my boobs to contend with. Now, it's going to really suck when I cant lay on my back much longer. However, I've trained myself pretty well to sleep on my sides. It's just for a short time.

  • No, I would never do that. I managed ok by propping myself up on a pillow so I was side-stomach sleeping.

I've always been a stomach sleeper but have been sleeping with a body pillow the last few months. I'm able to lay on my left side at an angle that makes me feel like I'm close to the way I use to sleep. It's not the same but you adjust. Good Luck!

  • Well if you cut it just right, you can replace the circle after you're done being pregnant...  I've laid awake many an hour thinking about this, clearly :)

  • My Dr. said I can tummy sleep until 24 weeks. I'm using my Bump Nest to get used to side sleeping now, but I'm always slightly more on my tummy than my side!

Not sure if I would cut a hole in my mattress though!! Maybe if I get really desperate. ;)

I've been twisting this way in a kinda - stomach position, but I suspect my constant back pain is made worse by this?

ETA. I would totally pay for something that would let me go back to my old position of tummy sleeping.
  • I am a tummy sleeper. I slept on my tummy the entire pregnancy last time with no discomfort. So far this time I have continued to do the same.

I've seen some ladies put an inter-tube (like you would use in the pool) partially inflated with a sheet over it and a couple of pillows stacked up for your head. I haven't tried it yet, but am getting to where I will have to soon. @19weeks

What body pillow do you use Devilzangel609?

  • I've seen a raft for a pool with a hole in the middle but I haven't been able to find it to buy it.  Every time I turn too much and sleep on part of my stomach my ribs are in so much pain the next morning so I've learned to suck it up for now! I do dig a hole for my belly and boobs when I'm at the beach though!

  • I don't know if I would recommend it. I am a massage therapist and I was taught in my training lessons to even stay away from the massage tables with the hole cut out for pregnant ladies. As I remember, it was something to do with the weight/pressure. I never performed pre-natal massages, so I never worried about it too much.

As a tummy sleeper I feel your pain, but it's just for a few more months. I am also sleeping modified on my side with a leg up. Hang in there and save your mattress :)
