Pumping in the car

This is my first post but have been lurking every so often!
I have business travel next week for the first time since I've been back and need to drive for 5 hours. Wondering if anyone has had luck with pumping while driving or if I need to plan to make a stop along the way. Thanks!

Re: Pumping in the car

  • I pumped during my hourly commute twice a day.  I had a good pumping bra and I used a nursing cover.  Just connect everything before you start driving and disconnect when you're done.  Its also possible to set up and take everything down while driving...but that's unsafe so I won't recommend it. ;)

  • Also, I always laid a hand towel on my lap for drips and to wipe up when I was done.

Ditto the prior poster.  It is actually really easy as long as you have a good handsfree bra.  Depending on your pump you might need a car adapter or batteries, too.

  • My experience was similar to the other posters as well.  Was a bit different mindset than pumping in my office, but if traffic wasn't bad, it was often easier to pump while driving.

  • I've done it, but my commute was only an hr.  For such a long drive, I would probably pull over and stop to pump.  I don't want to mess with the parts and milk bottles while driving, and I don't want to be connected to the pump for the duration of the drive.

  • That's great thanks ladies! I have a hands free bra though I haven't used it yet- I'll make sure to get some practice in before my drive!
  • I would just stop and pump, but I would need a break or two if I was driving that far anyway and I'd want to put the milk in a cooler.

I just returned to work two weeks ago and have pumped twice in the car. The first time was really awkward. I felt like everyone was looking at me. But the second time seemed easier. I imagine it will only get easier from there.
  • I'm in awe of women who can pump and drive. I feel like I need to witness it firsthand to even comprehend your stories. (FTM in November) :-)

  • Same.
Although when I've had distances like that I have pulled over, hooked up. Driven a ways, pulled over again and taken it off.

This is what I would do and have done. It works out because odds are I could use a restroom break anyway haha

I actually found a YouTube video that sort of helped me.

  • I've pumped in cars and on planes. When driving, I prefer to only pump on one side an at time - just my preference. Agree with the fact you'll need to be set up for hands free. Using rubber bands work great. I suggest getting set up before getting on the road or doing a quick stop to set up initially.
  • Nice I'll have to search for a video! I use rubber bands at work but they don't always stay up- so I end up having to hold one!

That’s how I always pump and always have! I work in a prison, no way im pumping in here! I got the car adaptor for my car, got a hands free bra and was good to go. I just get set up before I start driving. If your modest you could get a button up shirt to hide it

Make sure you have a good nursing cover and stop to set up and then again to clean up (maybe coinciding with stopping for a meal/gas and then again to pee?). I have never pumped while driving, but I did pump a bunch on road trips while DH was driving (so that we didn't need the set up/clean up stops) and it was never an issue. I have a nursing bandeau bra that goes over my regular for hands free and nursing cover that has a built in towel for spills, plus a car adapter for the pump.
