We tip very well (20%+) but if a server does not do their job (check on drinks, get orders right, etc... things THEY are responsible for) I don't think they should EXPECT to get a tip. I am talking if they aren't doing their job, not if it is the kitchen's fault etc.
I think we can't always be sure of the conditions the server is working under. We know for sure he/she is not making much in terms of hourly wages. If a restaurant isn't busy, I might judge a little more quickly. But if the restaurant is busy? You don't know if they're short-staffed or whatever. The server should not be punished for that. I try to err on the side of "benefit of the doubt" and "generosity."
ETA: I effing HAAAAATTTEEEE that Christmas Mariah Carey song. When I worked retail at Christmas they played it 8000000 times per shift. I want to gouge my eyes out when I hear that one. Also, that horrible Last Christmas song.

However, if the server is a poor server, yes, they deserve a lower tip. I'm talking about things within their control, of course, not because the restaurant is busy and short staffed, because of a kitchen mess up, etc.

My own UO. The whole Thor being a woman now thing (and it not being Mrs. Thor or a female version of Thor, just Thor is female)?? Who freaking cares. If you know anything about comics (I don't read them, I just know this stuff from having a comic nerd husband and doing a paper on comics in libraries), you know that their story lines change ALL THE TIME. Their histories, real identities (like Robin), they die and come back, the whole storyline changes, whatever. Thor has taken different forms before and still been Thor. He's been a frog. He's been in other people's bodies. He's even been a woman before.
The whole thing is overrated and talked about too much even if it was a new thing, but especially because it isn't a big deal because it's happened before.

I love Sinatra. My step dad played him all the time when I was little and he taught me how to dance to his songs. I also love Mariah Carey's music but she's gotten pretty cray cray over the years. NSYNC's whole Christmas album is great. I may own two of them because I temporarily lost one and couldn't go without.

That's the thing... it's NOT a gesture of appreciation, it's how servers get paid. If they don't make it in tips, the restaurant is supposed to make up the difference between "tip wage" and minimum wage. Until we change that system, then I understand it being a bit of an "expectation" on the part of the server. I was a cater waitress off and on for years, and I made an average of $11 an hour and didn't have to tip out runners, bartenders, bar backs, ect like I did when I worked in a conventional restaurant.
I totally understand what you're saying, @wildflower26, about wanting the SYSTEM to change (as in, tell me what this actually costs and I'll pay it or not), but unless that happens, I don't think it's fair to punish servers for the system sucking.

@wildflower26 - I think servers should be paid minimum wage, and tipping can be done if you feel service was exceptional. Mainly because I think paying waitstaff under minimum wage artificially pushes the costs of employment onto the customer when that's a cost that should be part of the overall business model especially if they are legally required to make up the difference. It seems like that system is set-up for abuse by both employers and employees. While the base cost of food may increase but if you're not tipping an extra 20% then the total cost of the meal isn't going to be that different.
I've heard from a few waiter friends that some restaurants make all of the servers pool their tips together then divy them out amongst the entire tipped staff where others each server keeps what they actually earned after tipping bussers, bartenders, etc. I prefer the latter so that servers are actually rewarded according to the work they do. I don't think it's fair that a great waiters tip money goes to helping out a subpar waiter's earnings.

One last story, the first time he met R, he asked " where'd you get that from?" I wanted to say " duh, babies r us". Instead I said my wife! Ha

When I was in grad school, a friend took his shoes to be repaired, and I went with him to pick then up. In order to get the shoes, we had to stand in the parking lot and listen to the shoe repairman sing Frank Sinatra songs in Russian.
All this frank Sinatra talk got me thinking of that.

Re:pig tails. 1 braid hits me in the face every time I bend down. Two stay to the sides. Bending down to collect eggs, or what ever and getting hit in the face every time gets old real fast. I also do the two braids when running equipment because of the safety gear. One braid takes too much room in the back and the equipment doesn't fit right.
I have not tipped for really poor service. DH and I are the only ones in the pub, and we can hear the waitress talking about how I am so difficult because I asked for dressing on the side (of my salad). We could hear the entire conversation, where she admitted she forgot to put in our order. I went out of my way to tip the chief, but not the waitress.
I'm not used to a tip being expected though. A tip is for something above and beyond, not for doing your job. Here we do because it's a poorly paid job, but fundamentally it's a broken system.
My UO: i think people should have to take a driving test for different environments. City driving Is vastly different then country road driving, summer driving is different then blizzard driving. It should be an endorsement(like a m1-motorcycle), but people should have the basics down on how to drive on a gravel highway, or how to drive around blind corners and hairpin corners. (Brought to you the a tourist from Alberta).
