Trying to Get Pregnant

Confused about late period- need advice!

So, I went off birth control in January and since then have had regular periods with my cycle usually about 28-30 days. Well this cycle I am on day 37 and I still have not gotten my period. I took a pregnancy test a few days ago and this morning and they are both negative. We were using condoms because we weren't quite ready to start trying yet. We did have unprotected sex on CD 25 and CD 29 but I was pretty sure that was past the time I could likely have gotten pregnant. I just don't get it because nothing is out of the ordinary and I'm not stressed or anything (well until now haha). In 13 or so years, I've never had a period late for this long. I don't really "feel" pregnant or have any pregnancy symptoms, but would be totally thrilled if I was pregnant. Really I'd just like to know!

I called my doctor this morning and spoke with one of the nurses and told her everything and she just said it happens sometimes and not to worry about it. Maybe that is right, but I felt a little brushed off. It just worries me because we were planning to start trying this month and now I don't know how that will happen if I don't get my period.

Is this normal? Could something be wrong or is this just a weird fluke? Or could I be pregnant and for some reason the tests are negative?

Re: Confused about late period- need advice!

  • Negative test means not pregnant. They don't lie, I promise.

  • You are normal until you aren't. Read the newbie blog (post titled READ THIS FIRST) and check out the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. Keep testing for a BFP once a week or until your period comes. If you hit CD 60 with no flow or BFP, call your doc.

  • Thanks for the replies everyone. I do completely understand how it works and unfortunately I do not temp yet and I wish I did so I could know if I simply ovulated late. It is just really out of the ordinary for my cycle to change and I just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this.

You probably just ovulated late. Before starting birth control, 28 day cycles were my norm. But now it seems every other cycle I have lasts about 35 days then back to 28-29. Some women don't have "ordinary" cycles unfortunately. Temping definitely helps to keep me off the crazy train though!

  • Thanks. New to all this and since it had never happened to me before I was just concerned. I'll look into temping so I will have a better idea and know if it is just a weird cycle. Guess there's a first for everything!
  • Your cycle can change at any time. You can have longer ones, shorter ones, different symptoms... it happens.

I will say that if you aren't quite ready to TTC, you should use some method of birth control consistently. Charting can be used to TTA, so if you want to go without condoms sometimes, check out Fertility Friend.

Also, since you don't know when you ovulated, you could end up pregnant from the unprotected sex you had. You'll have to keep testing and waiting at this point. And like others said, call your doctor if you get to CD 60 with no period or BFP.
