Breastfeeding

Sore breasts

My baby 12 days old. I am breastfeeding and supplementing with formula. I've always had low-supply, so I dont' really get engorged or anything. I just have a quick question. The scabbiness and initial pain of breastfeeding has passed, and he's latching pretty good. But my breasts, and I suppose specifically my nipples, are stinging, even when he's not nursing. When he is nursing it's just that initial sting. Silly question probably, but is this normal?

Unfortunately, nipple pain can be "normal" especially in the beginning.  My LO started with a bad latch (tongue tie) so it took a long time for me to heal.  After that, I would still experience pain on and off if his latch wasn't wide enough.  I found that putting some expressed milk on them helped and nipple butter was great to use too.  GL!

  • I am almost 8 months pp and only pumping twice a day now, but I still have nipple pain off and on. I think some women are just more sensitive. Definitely keep an eye out for thrush or mastitis, but if it seems like you just have sensitivity off and on you might have to tolerate it for the duration. Lanolin or some other nipple cream is a good suggestion, as is a cool pack after pumping/bfing. I use the gel pack by Lansinoh. Also make sure you aren't wearing a bra that's too tight. If you do pump at all make sure you are using the right size flange, the wrong size will contribute to your pain. Hope it gets better!
