Outdoor birthday parties?

Is anyone planning an outdoor party for their LO? I'm thinking of doing a farm themed party for Colby. One of the local parks has a free barn/petting zoo that is close and will be great entertainment for the kids. His party is going to be 9/28 and I'm really nervous of the weather here in New England. There isn't a pavilion or anything there really, just open fields. We do have a collapsible canopy but it doesn't have sides. I've never done a party outside the house. Obviously I would still need to make all the food which I'm ok with. Thinking of just grabbing some hay bales and blankets for seating. Is this a terrible idea? How did you handle an outdoor party? ( aside from praying for nice weather lol)

Re: Outdoor birthday parties?

  • I think it sounds like a great idea and it should start to be fall like by then so should be nice.

We are doing outdoors too in our yard, but DD's birthday is 9/1 so it will be the day before Labor Day - opposite end of the month as you.  But, DH and I keep saying if it rains we're screwed because we have no dining room table in our dining room and only a kitchen table that seats 6, so if everyone is crammed in our house due to rain it will really suck.   Oh well, I'll take my chances.

Fingers crossed for you and I say go for it.  Cute theme!!

Leo's party was outside last year. It was perfect weather. End of Sept is generally pretty safe, but we do get a lot of rain in general here. We borrowed a couple tables and folding chairs from Matt's office.

This year it will be outside again but not at home. We will be pretty screwed if it rains. Oh well. If it gets rained out, he will never know. For seating, I have a couple of picnic tables reserved and we will just throw down some blankets but the majority of the time, we will be out in the orchard picking apples and doing a pumpkin shoot.

We do outside at home. I just chance it. Worse comes to worse, people are standing in my kitchen eating. We throw BBQs all the time and the rain usually works in our favor. If not, we can always push it a day.

L is Labor Day weekend as well, so it is still really hot here; no help in that department.

    Kid #2 - maybe???

  • DD's birthday parties will be outside until she asks for something else. I'm lazy and enjoy being able to spray off any mess rather than deal with cleaning stuff inside.

  • I'm not sure what the weather is typically like in New England, but here in Washington state I would not chance an outdoor party with no indoor back up, it rains way to much here. We are doing a BBQ at our house and I hope it's nice enough to be in the backyard, but if not we will just be in the house.

If your weather is typically mild that time of year though them go for it, sounds like a blast!

I'd be too worried about the weather. End of September here can be GORGEOUS and warm, but you never know. Is there any sort of shelter or pavilion at the park that you could reserve as a back up?
Also, thanks again for the idea.....you mentioned a Little Blue Truck party as a possibility a while ago. I totally forgot about it and couldn't come up with anything new that we haven't done or that any of our immediate family haven't done for a kid party lately. And then I opened this thread! Will loves LBT!
For some reason, DH didn't like our theme last year and has made it clear that he wanted to have a say this year. I don't know why he cares....I did all the leg work, crafting, etc. I ran LBT by him at dinner and he's on board. Now I can start the party planning!

  • We are doing an outdoor party. I didn't even think about a canopy until now... Ours says Chargers on it. I don't think it goes with the decor. :(

We are thinking about doing an outdoor party, but don't have anything planned yet. I'd say you might want a backup shelter just in case, but end of Sept here is still pretty nice. I think I might risk it.

Check the Farmers Almanac for weather ?! (Sounds silly but I've found it helpful in the past)
