How much for baby classes?

I'm considering putting my 18mo little guy into a gymnastics class (he's tumbled over our furniture enough!). I've looked around and they can be pretty expensive. Wondering how much are you willing to pay, per month for those mommy & me type of classes, either music or dance or gymboree? What's too much? Is it worth it? Thoughts? Thanks!

Re: How much for baby classes?

  • Most of those type classes are around $55- 60 per month around here. When DD turned 2 I put her in a gymnastics class that I'm not part of and it's $45 per month for 45 mins per week. I like that I'm not in because it gives her an opportunity to follow instructions from someone other than me.

  • We live in a mid-cost of living area, and man, these are expensive. Gymnastics around here is $30 annual fee plus $99 for 8 classes. We are going to wait on this until it is cold, at least. There are drop in classes at another place for $5/class, but I have heard it is very crowded and you barely get a turn. The university here has music classes and they cost about $18/hr for a group class. I paid that for one session because she was so into music but we can't afford to do it all the time. I think there are drop-in music classes for around $8/hr at a cloth diaper store on the other side of town, but for slightly older kids. We can take swimming from the city for about $8/hr, but the classes are not very instructional. There is a well-regarded swim school that apparently actually will lead to a swimming child but it costs about $30/hr. Montessorri preschool around here starts at 18 months and is $6500/year for 5 mornings/week. We will be choosing a less expensive preschool at age 3.5 that is a couple mornings/week for 2K/year. The expensive preschool is about the only thing we have ruled out completely due to cost. When she is 2, she can go to science classes and nature classes for around $10/hr and I will do that if I think she can handle them. There are also drop in activities at those places for $3/hour. Library storytime is free, so we do that now. Pre-ballet for 2.5 year-olds is $12 for 45 minutes, so we might do that when she is a bit older. We play a lot at parks since it is nice outside and visit nature centers on our own. I am mostly trying to limit things until she will gain the max benefits and so that we can afford to do them if she falls in love with them for the next 18 years... I'm also trying to consider how a new baby fits into this. Some day he'll want to take classes, and if I take him to U. music class, I have to pay for him too, since newborns are allowed. At gymnastics, I would probably need a baby-sitter since I'm not sure I could lift M, etc. even while baby-wearing. For science class, etc. I think I can care for the baby and also help M, so I think that could be a good option for us. For me, the value comes from doing SOMETHING and from possibly making some mom friends. In the winter, there may be some value to finding ways to get in physical activity. I certainly do not think classes are necessary so you should do what you can afford, what your child seems to enjoy, and what makes your day better.
  • DS & I have been attending a weekly "developmental play group" for over a year now.  We pay about $25/class (each class is 75 minutes long).  When we sign up for each semester, we also get a free open play pass for 10 visits (which worths $80 if purchased separately).

We are doing (30-min) swim class at our local Y.  For non-member, it is about $17/class.

In my area, most music classes run somewhere between $20-25/class; they are usually 45 minutes long.

    Haven't looked into gym classes.

Since everything is sort of within the same price range here, my threshold would be about $25/class.

We have only done swim lessons so far. $175 for 12 private lessons. I was looking at a music class that was a little over $100 for about 12 weeks, but we haven't done that yet.
  • We've been doing baby-parent swim classes since 6 months old, and they're $13 per class (1x/week).  We're moving to the next level of swimming in September, where they start to actually become more "class-like" and they're $18 per class.  I'm willing to pay for it because I think being able to swim is an important skill.

We've looked at doing some kind of gymnastics/tumbling class because she's a little monkey too - but they're usually the same time as swim lessons so haven't worked out.  They're about $12.50 to $17.50 per class depending on the location.
  • We do a weekly music class through our park district that comes out to about $8 a class. Swim lessons through our gym that were $65 for 8 weeks. I've been looking into gymnastics to change things up and let LO try something new - there's a gym near us that does them for $40 a month and has a daily "open gym" hour for $5.

  • I do music together and think it's great for my DS. He tends to be intimidated in larger groups, and it's really flexible in terms of participation. I did a baby movement type of class before and felt like I spent the whole time trying to coax DS to do stuff. In music together, I can just let him chill on my lap and feel like he's still getting something out of it, and recently he's started to get more active. It's really fun to see him start to get more confidence, wander and play with the musical instruments during the "play along" part.

Another perk - if he starts to fuss in the car, putting the music together CD on almost always makes him happy. It also helps keep him awake if we're driving close to nap time.

It's about $100/month, but totally worth it for us, I think.

Our parent and tot swim lessons are about $65 for 9-10 lessons.  The lessons are 30min each, with about 10 toddlers and their parents in the water.

Music classes were a bit more expensive at $11 a class (in groups of 10ish classes).  The classes were 30min and again about 10 infants or toddlers with a parent.

We are about to start gymnastics and it will run about $125 for 12 classes, 45min per class.

We do a Mommy and Me gymnastics class. The summer session is 10 classes and I paid $100 plus a one time $25 registration fee that is good as long as he is a student at the gym. Swim lessons were more expensive. We got 8 half hour classes for $200. I think he was a little young for the swimming, but the gymnastics is fantastic for allowing him to burn off energy and increase coordination and learning to listen to someone besides me.

  • Thanks everyone! The gymnastics classes Im considering are $125 for 10 weeks and it seems pretty popular on yelp haha. I think we will definitely try it and then start a class savings along with college :)
