STM+ Genetics Question

I can't remember if we've discussed this before, and I had no idea how to search it so I didn't attempt. Oh well.

Anyway, I've googled it and found that some people *think* these things could *possibly* be genetic, but they aren't sure. Obviously, this isn't going to be a scientific study, I'm just interested to find out how many of you STM+ had labor and deliveries similar to your own mother's.

Like, were you in labor for a similar amount of time? Did your mom deliver her first at 38w and you did, too? Or were you a total opposite from your mom?

My mom is lame and can't remember crap...from time to time she comes up with a gem like "we were told to drink a beer during pregnancy to help us relax" or "oh well I had 3 c/s so you will too"
I do have her insane morning sickness though. And weirder still it's like she finds great joy in my suffering as repentance for raising me. Yup we have issues.

As far as what my patients and their moms say it seems 50/50 either you're just like your mom/family labor history or not at all.

This. Laboring times aren't genetic...but there are certain things that ARE genetic that may affect how long it takes you to deliver and may result in similar times to your mom. The good example here is pelvic size...but it could also be your response to certain drugs, uterine tone, how you carry baby (via body shape), etc

I started a thread about this a long time ago out of curiosity. I can tell you that the overall result is that there is no correlation between the daughter's experience to the mother's experience when it comes to labor/delivery.

My sister delivered vaginal and was in labor for 6 hours, the complete opposite if my mom. My mom had placenta previa which I have but she only labored for 4 hours before she had a c-section with me and delivered my sister and brother at 39 with c-sections. I labored for 16 hours before having an emergency c-section with DD. I don't think it's genetics but I think births between mother and daughter could be similar, sometimes. My mom was the first to have a c-section.

My mom went until 42 weeks with me and had a failed induction and emergency C section due to fetal distress. She had a RCS at 39 weeks with my brother. I had DD1 at 37 weeks with a 13 hour labor. My water broke but I never started to have contractions so I was hooked up to pitocin. DD1 went into distress and I was being set up for an emergency c section when I had her vaginally.

I just read a book Baby Catcher. The author is a midwife and she said that women labor more like their sisters than their mothers. My mother was in labor for a very short time with both my sister and I. My sister has had 3 very fast births too (the longest was 3 hours and according to my mother it was awful
>:P) I was in labor for about 10 hours (not that long) but 3 hours was me pushing. DS had a big head that he inherited from his father.

My delivery dates and labors have been very similar to my mom's, my aunt's, and my grandma's (all on the same side). I definitely believe genetics play a role in this.

I FEEL like what all of ya'll are trying to tell me is that there's no way to know. Which means I can't plan. Which throws my control-freak self into a tizzy. FTM grasping for any stability....aren't we just precious?

FTM so no clue about labor, but with pregnancy, my mom HATED every minute of it. She said she was swollen, uncomfortable, and miserable for the entire nine months. I've kind of loved being pregnant so far, so I know we're different when it comes to that. (Although pregnancy has been getting harder in the last week or so! Harder to breathe, heartburn, etc.)

I came two weeks late, and my brother, who is older, was induced at 1 week past his due date because that's how they did things then. My mom felt sick with me, but not nearly as bad as I feel, although she was younger. I am not sure, but I think her labor was fairly quick, and mine was very quick. However, my baby came 2 months early for unknown reasons. What is interesting is that DH came 2 months early also. My baby was very large for a baby born that early and so was he. My brother and I were both 7.5 lbs. My child continues to be on the large side, and I was always normal sized as a child. We are in a preemie genetics study and they are looking for a preemie gene. So you might ask your MIL too.

My mother didn't have morning sickness with either of her pregnancies (one boy, one girl), and I haven't experienced it either.

Both my husband and I were born a week after our due dates so I fully expected DS to be born late as well. Nope. I was induced at 38 weeks due to high blood pressure. Car seat wasn't installed and hospital bag wasn't packed. Stupid me.

All 3 of my mom's labors were different. #1 was 14 hours, #2 (me) was 6, and #3 was 36. My sister and I both had inductions for #1. Hers lasted 12 hours and mine lasted 26 hours. Her second labor (spontaneous) was about 24 hours from first timeable contraction to delivery, but her contractions were light and manageable until about 2 hours before pushing, so she was able to comfortably labor at home for most of it. I believe that all the babies except the inductions were late, so I'm fully expecting to go past my due date. :-)

Our pregnancies and the size of the babies born have been somewhat similar, however. We all had relatively easy pregnancies with little or no morning sickness and we all carried similarly. The babies have been between between 6.5 and 8 lbs.

I was born 2 weeks late, the same as my other 2 sisters and we were all in the 7lb range. My mom had short labors and fast deliveries.

My pregnancy symptoms almost mirrored my mom's exactly, where my younger sister was the complete opposite of us. I was induced for medical reasons on DS's due date so idk how long I would have gone, but my labor was relatively short about 5 hours and I only pushed for 10 min if that, similar to my Mom. DS was just shy of 7lbs. My sister was also induced about a week and a half after her due date and also had a similar labor and delivery, her DD was in the 7lb range.

I am the total opposite from my Mom. My Mom had to be induced with me at 42 and had a 6 hour labor. With my brother, she had him around 40 weeks, but nearly had him in the car!

My body however started trying to evict DS at 24 weeks and then ended up in a 16 hour active labor marathon after my water breaking naturally at 38 weeks. This time we are following a similar path, just starting at 29 weeks. So it remains to be seen what my body will do.

I am one of three and my mom had to be induced at 42 weeks with all of us, she warned me ahead of time that I would end up overdue and I did with my first and anticipate the same for this pregnancy. I have no idea if it's genetics or just how it happened but my two aunts on my moms side were overdue with all of theirs too, I don't know how accurate those dates were because they didn't have dating ultrasounds and all went strictly off of LMP so who knows. But it sure is interesting.

that makes sense because it takes into account genetics from your dad's side that may factor genetically into certain things that will affect labor. Too bad I don't have a sister... it would have been neat to compare experiences!!

also my mom popped out two nearly 10lb babies (my younger brothers at 9lb10oz and 9lb15oz) without tearing... soooooo I'm hoping that is genetic

The hard part is relying on family to be your indication...I find with patients this sets many people up for unrealistic expectations, disappointment or a lot of "I told you so's" from we'll meaning family members.

Remember that labor is one of the first big clues that another person is now in charge

That being said I remember asking everyone I knew before my first baby..."so the day you went into labor did you wake up and feel different? Did you just know that would be the day?" Most people said no. I had no idea either time. When it happened it just happened and each one was different.

All 3 of my Mom's labors were well over 24 hours... that was back when they let you labor for more than 24 hours after your water broke. The labor with my son was 14 hours.
