Reflux and sleeping

DD had reflux and was 6 weeks yesterday. So far, she has been sleeping in her rock and play. Someone gave it to us and I heard all these great things and how everyone loved them so we just went with it and she really has slept well in it. I read some articles someone posted on another board about them last night though and I really would like to transition her out of it just to be safe. The one time we tried to have her sleep in her pack and play she grunted and whimpered until I finally gave up and put her back in the rocker. I'm assuming laying flat just made her super uncomfortable. Do I prop up one end of her pack and play? If so what's the best/safest way? I'm also a little nervous because she almost always spits up in her sleep and I'm scared about her aspirating it if she's flat. Any tips from BTDT moms?

Re: Reflux and sleeping

  • DD is in a pnp to sleep. We haven't raised the ends yet, but have thought about it. I have found that keeping her upright for about 30 minutes after eating helps, like @kaysa2 said. She still spits up when sleeping, but it's not as bad. My DD always sleeps with her head turned to the side and has never had any issues with choking.

  • @kaysa2‌ how tall are your planks? I want it to be high enough to help but I don't want her sliding and getting scrunched at the bottom either
  • With C we used a mattress wedge for under her crib mattress, they make them just the right size. Never had a problem with her slipping. With both kids we've done keeping them up right after a feed for 15-20 minutes and that makes a huge difference.

  • @kaysa2‌ have I told you lately you're a genius?!

I jacked up the end of the pack n play with wood planks to make a nice angle. I also found just keeping DD upright for about 30 minutes after feeding took care of most of the spit up issues.

As for choking - infants have a natural reflux that keeps them from chocking to death on their own spit up. I don't remember the name of the reflex, but can look it up for you if you are really curious.

    As usual, @kaysa2‌ naaaaailed it

LO is also a swing sleeper due to the damned reflux and it works for us and him. No guilt.

  • can I ask what the issue is with sleeping in the rnp? we have one for B because when he was getting his tube feeds he had to be at an angle so he got used to it and we just stuck with it. I have only heard good things about it.
  • @stephross88‌ I guess some people have issues with flat spots and torticollis, they say they increase the risk of SIDS because they're not flat on their back, the positioning makes their chin drop to their chest which has a risk of cutting off their airway, it doesn't allow for natural movement, it doesn't put their spine in a very good position...I think that was pretty much all the negatives. They're all things that would probably never happen but I figure why risk it. If she refuses to sleep in the pack and play and seems completely miserable we may just have to use it anyway. We do have a snuza which gives me some piece of mind about some of those issues. There was a few different articles, just google rock and play problems and you would probably find them

Ok so this has more todo with reflux than sleeping just thought I would let you guys know what my dr told me to do. So have LO's head always above her tummy (I.e. Never lay her down flat...), keep her sitting up right for at least 10mins after eating and every other feeding feed her 2oz bm/formula mixed with rice cereal in a bottle (not to thick more like really runny cream of wheat).
  • My LO sleeps in her R&P all the time. I noticed the chin to chest thing and worried a little about it especially since she already has respiratory problems. The two people who recommended it to me have thriving, breathing, 1 yr olds with round heads. So idk.
