Pregnant after 35

Job question

I am currently temping at a job and have been interviewing for a diffrent position within the same company. I just today was offered the position. However, they don't want me to start till aug 11 and I will just be 12 weeks that week. When do you think I should tell my boss? I am so conflicted and nervous! I need this job and I want to be honest.

Re: Job question

  • Congrats on the job!  Great question- I'm in a similar, but different situation.  My opinion is that it is unlikely that someone else can tell that you are pregnant, even if you can see a little bump, etc.  I'd accept the offer and see if you can negotiate an earlier start date.  I know that I've had contracts where the company was bound to a certain number of months with the agency so that might be a driver behind why the date needs to be 3 weeks out.

I'd also schedule a time to talk with the HR rep for that department about your pregnancy and discuss how and when to bring it up with your boss .  Legally, pregnancy is protected so they will be going down a slippery slope if they retract their offer especially after you accept.  You probably will be eligible for FMLA because you would be able to work enough hours before you are due, although I would confirm this with HR.

I'm new here- I'll post a intro shortly.

  • I wouldn't say anything. It's not a question they would be legally allowed to ask you, and they are not legally allowed to discriminate based on pregnancy.

What you owe them is enough time down the road to plan for your leave, but you can handle that later on in your pregnancy.

  • Agree with the PP. Accept the position if you want to but don't say anything at this time about being pregnant. It's up to you, but I would suggest holding off as long as you think you can before you tell them. When you do tell them be prepared a bit with ideas on options for who can handle your job while you're away, the things you'll do beforehand to get things in good shape before your leave, etc… My company/boss is one that has always been very understanding, but after I told him I was pregnant, I could see the questions coming up. He was concerned who could handle my projects, if I was planning on coming back to work, about how long I thought I would take off etc…So try to think about what you can say to ease their minds when you do decide to tell them.
