June 2014 Moms

SS: @jclester614 baby in NICU, need some June '14 encouragement!

Hi ladies! I could really use some FX, T&P's, and encouragement from June '14.

I was kicked off TB from July 10th to July 13th, when all the exciting things were happening. SO FRUSTRATING!!

Here's the scoop:

Eddie was born July 12 at 3:07am. He was 8lb 7oz and 20.5". I was able to give birth with no drugs, which was amazing and terrifying. I got to hold him for an hour before they took him to the nursery and started tests and medical care for his pneumonia.

Looking forward to writing up my story in full, but in the meantime, Eddie was transferred to another hospital's NICU Tues 7/15, and we expect he'll be there until Saturday at minimum. I don't have anywhere to stay at the hospital so I am going home nights (30 min away). Leaving him is the hardest thing.

I hate to see him hooked up, and I have to pump every 2 hours to get my milk supply up, since he's been too tired or too angry/hungry to BF aside from one magical session yesterday. I know you ladies who EP know how crazy this is with the stupid washing. And, I am only producing 10ml-15ml as of this post and trying not to feel bad about it. As of last night they gave him formula and I felt like shit for it. I know it's a perfectly fine sub for me, but you know, Mom Guilt. If I could stay overnight I could provide.

I will add that his outlook is VERY good, I know he will be better soon on his antibiotics, but in the meantime I am struggling emotionally to leave him and not be able to just go home and bond. I am having floods of hormones ever since I found out he had to be transferred from the hospital we were at, where he had been on IV but could be in my room.

Leaving him at night sucks. Pumping sucks. Doing peri care at the hospital sucks. Having to walk around the hospital to eat sucks when you should be resting. Everyone leaning over your shoulder trying to "help" you breast feed (including DH!!!!) sucks times infinity. I want to be in my own space and tell everyone to eff off.

Thanks for reading, if you made it this far. Your reward is a pic!

  • Hope he gets to go home soon! Thinking of your fam!
  • T&P for both of you. We just came home from a 5 day NICU stay. We also live about 30 min away and they didn't have accommodations for us. It's exhausting!

If the LC isn't helpful, don't see her. It is your choice and not required. BF is hard, it's not just you. Pumping is also hard, but worth keeping up if you want to BF. Does your hospital have a room for you to pump in?  It's tough in the NICU when you don't have privacy and you essentially have to just sit there all day waiting to BF or pump.

Oh my gosh--I feel for you more than you know! My baby was also born on June 12th and got pneumonia due to aspirated meconium. They moved her to another hospital with a NICU, and there was no place for *parents to stay (do you live in MA by any chance??)
Fortunately, after 2 weeks, they discharged her even though she wasn't better, and they let us do her oxygen therapy at home and treated her as out-patient. Any chance they could do that for you, too?
I SOO know how you feel. Leaving baby... Having nurses tell you baby is tired, so you can't nurse her... Having them put tubes down her throat... Taken care of by different strangers every day... Pricking her little feet every other day...

    I hope your baby gets well very soon. {{{Hugs}}}

  • THANK YOU all so incredibly much. I read thru during a pumping session earlier and it was so helpful to me. My outlook is cheerier now that I have vented and gotten some emotions out if the way. You ladies who are / have been in NICU for extended stays are absolutely amazing, I cannot even fathom your patience and perseverance!!!!

Also, we totally latched for TWO feeding a this evening. Yay!!!! The secret to our success? The nurse was really organized and told me exactly what to expect for her routine, and then she left us alone to nurse. Gee whiz, imagine that - privacy!

And, I decided to bring my phone in the pumping room so I could look at pics of LO --- and produced 50% more milk, yay!

@CherSomething - congrats to you!! My LO aspirated mecinium too. We do live in Mass, yes. But I am so shocked you'd be sent home with oxygen treatment, that would def not be an option. But he was also able to come off oxygen after about 24 hours or so, so that could be the difference.
  • Thinking of you! Don't stress too much about the pumping. I was in the same boat, only getting 10ml at a time and my supply has been verrrry slowly building up to where I now get a few ounces per pump session. You will get there, mama. Hugs!

@jclester614‌ you ARE in Mass? My baby was at Baystate NICU--they cover all of Western MA. Just curious because you said your NICU doesnt have a place for parents to stay and that hospital doesn't. Is that your hospital?
She still has oxygen. She got worse after the 7 day antibiotics, required more oxygen than before. We get her sleep study done this weds to determine if she can come off.
