What is Theory of Mind exactly?

I'm trying to understand when there is a deficet, how does it present itself...is it difficulty in expressing how they feel when in distress?

How about social hierarchy understanding, when a child has difficulty understanding that they are not on the same level as a parent/teacher? Is that ToM or something else?

    I try to give DS a sense of control over his environment by allowing for him to choose, if course I can't all the time
