What's normal for naps at this age?

I'm sure there's a wide variation of normal, but I've just noticed how as of the past week or so (maybe longer? Don't remember) my son doesn't do well sleeping on-the-go anymore. When we go to Target or run other errands, instead of sleeping he is awake and alert the whole time. He no longer falls asleep when he needs to, I need to be very conscientious about setting him down for a nap. He also needs to be in a quiet, dark room to get settled. If I don't make sure he gets his morning nap, he is crazy fussy all day and if he doesn't get his afternoon nap, the evenings go to hell. If I'm very intentional about going through our nap routine and getting him to sleep for two 2-hr naps a day, he is a very fun and happy kid.

Is this normal or am I misinterpreting his fussiness? I thought they were usually quite a bit older before you needed to make sure not to mess with their nap schedule.

  • We are having the same issue. DD does not just fall asleep anywhere anymore and she does not sleep in her car seat. She ends up overtired and screaming instead. She basically needs to be swaddled and in her swing and then she will sleep for a solid two hours.

Yeah, DS has always been a really difficult napper and he's being even more difficult now. *sigh*

  • I know you mentioned this, but the truth is every baby is so different when it comes to sleep, especially naps, that you will just have to do what works for your LO.  Being home for naps is a huge pain.  My whole life revolves around my 2 yr old's nap schedule.  And then, just when you have it figured out it changes overnight.  I would try strictly sticking to his schedule for a few days and see how he does.  If you see he is a happy baby you're just going to have to go with it.

  • My DD has been a difficult napper since she turned 5 weeks.... It's worse now that she's at daycare. At daycare she sleeps for 2 hours total maybe and then maybe a nap when she gets home.... Weekends she normally sleeps 4 hours total during the day. Her nap lengths are 30-45 minutes, sometimes 1.5 hours if we are lucky!!!
  • Just recently DS decided he will only nap if being held or will only nap 15-20 laying down when he used to take great 1-1.5 hour naps in his RNP. The other day he fell asleep during an afternoon and I just kept walking because I knew he would wake up the minute we stopped!

  • He will sleep in his stroller with white noise on my phone and his pacifier and usually takes one nap a day like that while I have DS1 at the park. Otherwise he pretty much needs to be home in a quiet, dark room to get a good nap.

  • DD is not a good napper. I get 3 or 4 30-45 minutes naps a day. I heard from other moms on FB that this is typical for a 3 month old. I wouldn't worry so much, your LO will come into a routine!
